Leave aside the dumb as fuck roach/exterminator analogy. This is like we were electing a fire marshal and we elected the convicted arsonist promising to commit more arson and we’re yelling at the guy who was not elected fire marshal for not using the fire marshal’s powers to stop the fire marshal.
regret to inform that a nation doesn't have ownership like a house. You can't just call up liberals to solve your problems.

Broken Earth trilogy is incredible. Raw and original and genuinely difficult in its implications (highly complimentary).
N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth series made her the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel. She is the first author to win in 3 consecutive years & the first to win for all 3 novels in a trilogy. Recipient MacArthur Genius Grant, 2020.

Here's the New York Times Deputy National Editor admitting that his employer cannot verify within 24 hours whether the President of the United States was lying or not when he claimed the US military had struck a target inside Venezuelan territory. Note the wholly unearned sanctimony.
There is a culture of immediate gratification that isn't satisfied by rigorous fact-gathering and editing. The internet runs fast and shallow.

Remember when people bullied starfish off this website over this
I hate this sort of meme.

“The only difference between the parties is whether the power to destroy human civilization rests in the hands of leaders who think gays, women, and black people should have their rights acknowledged.”

Even if true, how is Rainbow B-52 not infinitely preferable?

Actually, "trust the science" is almost always the epistemic posture non-experts should adopt wrt scientific issues. "You," for most values of "you," aren't doing science when you question it.

Seen on the other site:

"Bernie never ended up becoming President but he did something far greater: launch a movement that will outlive him and fundamentally transform the trajectory of the US forever"

I actually agree.

Because "downward" is also a trajectory.

The rapture will soon finally happen and the righteous will prove to the wicked the errors of their ways, washing away all of their sins in a cleansing fire. Just as soon as this bubble bursts.

bsky is dunking on this, because of course we are, but like, no, these are *actually the questions we have to answer* if we want to transition the US to public healthcare, and we have to answer them *right*, and I think it's important to do so, because I want that to happen
How much are you going to pay doctors?

Which current hospitals get shut down ?

What happens if doctors opt out of the system ? Who is going to invest in new curative therapies. You ?

How much in taxes pr year do you think it's possible to collect if you took every penny from billionaires?
Half the amount that everyone currently pays could provide universal healthcare. Private health companies don’t need to exist. Eliminate them. And use your collective buying power and economies of scale to get it done. Every cent of their profit is healthcare denied.

Folks, the economic indicators don't matter, people need to get it through their heads that it's always been about *propaganda*, that's why Biden, despite passing multiple generational pieces of legislation, was panned, and why Trump, despite being a bumbling idiot with mush brain, was praised.

I want to read this article. Two (meant constructively) things:

1) "demonstrating that LLMs are worthless for indexing" should, like most of these things, have qualifiers like "in our hands and with our LLM"
2) when people talk like this about accuracy, I suspect the workflow as much as the model.
There’s an excellent and devastatingly thorough article in the latest @indexers.bsky.social journal by Elizabeth Bartmess and Michele Combs demonstrating that LLMs are worthless for indexing

Lots of posts like this in the last few days, and almost all of them swarmed by dozens or hundreds of repliers who are searingly angry at being told American material life is not, in fact, worse than it was decades ago. What I’m saying is, WHAT IF THAT DYNAMIC IS WHY EVERYONE BELIEVES IT’S SO BAD?
Americans in their 20s and 30s may not feel that they’re richer than their equivalents 60 years ago, but they’re objectively wrong.

It’s fascinating how important it is to some people not to say “I’m struggling, it’s hard” or “I need help”—objectively true—but to instead insist they have it worse.

The second paragraph of this justification for not voting for Harris is functionally indistinct from "I wouldn't want to get a beer with her." Even worse, it's based on nothing but parasocial psychologizing. This person either didn't agree Trump was very bad, or she thought being arrogant was worse.

The best reason to stop panicking about our imminent doom from corporations sacrificing our limited resources to Moloch is that it's not true. A close second is that we really need immigration culturally, economically, and morally and are not willing to take in mass immigration while panicking.
Once again tapping the sign that says "the only reason the US doesn't have a looming workforce catastrophe like Brazil and Vietnam is because of immigration".
