Got one of those AI book promo scam emails for... a book I did not write. At first I thought it might've been a completely hallucinated title, but turns out there's a 27-page ebook by someone with my middle-initial-last-name combo. Bad job, scammers!

The only synagogue in Jackson, MS burned last night. It was arson. They've been here before--they were attacked by the KKK because the rabbi spoke in favor of civil rights.

They have no usable torah for services, all burned. Torahs are handmade! If you can donate a bit this week, here's a spot.
For anyone else reading this, feeling helpless, and wondering what they can do: the synagogue has a donation form and I've donated with a note that it's for fire recovery immediate expenses. www.bethisraelms.org

News of me: I’m retiring. I’m 67 years old and I’ve worked full-time at Tor Books for 37 of those years. Today, January 5, is my official last day. This has been in train for several months, and while it hasn’t been a secret for some time, I haven’t mentioned it on social media until now. (1/3)

I keep seeing AI takes that declare "You might accidentally stumble into using AI" and... No I won't? I know how to avoid it.

Also , if they provide examples outside of that nebulous statement, they're usually for tasks you ought to pay a human to do.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

I have half an essay about authorial voice and style and how you learn to do those things. It's sitting, angry-typed in Notepad, because what was supposed to be a thread has turned into a blog post.

But also I am going to go make art, with my hands and not a machine, so it can percolate a bit.

And please also, AGAIN, never forget that they are inherently unethical to use because no one gave permission for their research or writing to be used in it. It is all stolen, and if you're using the plagiarism machine, please keep that in mind.
My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.
