I initially wondered if it was a mistake not to mention St Paul in the first post of my thread, but now I see I laid a trap for Minneapolitans to think this is about _their_ mayoral race. ((howls in underdog))
Hard to say - many of the views he expressed would be aligned to the DFL and left of center. Racism and sexism are nonpartisan. It’s always a jolt when spoken aloud so plainly, with not a whiff of self-awareness.
Apparently, yes! And Molly’s house was in full view of our conversation. 👀
Help me keep Melvin’s mug off the wall of former mayors for a few more years. Rank Carter #1 and vote yes twice. /end
This doorknocking moment underscored that we have a long way to go to counter racism and sexism in our city. God forbid we have a hot second when a white man’s butt is not warming a seat of power at city hall. Will the walls come crumbling down? 7/x
(This resident clearly didn’t realize that his new council member was a white woman, nor that her house was in plain view of his front step! This factoid is neither here nor there, but made the situation that much more surreal.) 6/x
In 2024, St Paul became the first American city of over 300k residents to have an all-female council, and six of the seven were women of color. Since then, Mitra stepped down and Molly Coleman won her seat. At this point, still all-female, and 5/7 are women of color. 5/x
2018 was also the year Mitra Jalali-Nelson was elected to St Paul City Council. With her election, the council had its first-ever majority-female composition since its founding. 4/x
In 2018, Melvin Carter III, a black man, broke the streak of white male mayors the city had for 168 years. Because you don’t get your own plaque added to the wall until your service is complete, Mayor Carter walks past this wall each day and sees 53 white dudes on the wall. 3/x
It immediately made me think of the wall in the St Paul mayor’s office that has photos of every mayor that has served since 1850 - 53 of them. I used to go there weekly for a meeting during Chris Coleman’s tenure. At that time, all the images were of white men. 2/x
Was out knocking the doors today for a black mayoral candidate and had a resident say he, a white male, didn’t feel represented by city leadership because “no one in the mayor’s office or on City Council looks like me or *even* like you” (I’m a white woman). 1/x

Case in point: this morning I saw multiple people walking - and in this case, rolling - on the street under Hiawatha on Franklin since the sidewalk is fenced off.

BOSTON (AP) — Judges order the federal government to use contingency funds for SNAP food aid payments during the shutdown.
It’s his day and he knows it. He has assumed position. #catsky #Halloween
I was disheartened to see fencing going up around the SPPD HQ bldg and Ramsey County jail. It reminded me of the loooong time they had double fencing and razor wire after George Floyd’s murder. When they did that, they gobbled up sidewalks, at least one bus stop, and parts of some streets. 😒
And to be clear, I’m talking about Vance undermining the lives of his own biracial children. I’m not referring to the menswear guy. He is a national treasure.
Imagine undermining your children’s lives like this
JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧵
Different language scary ☹️😲😱
Vance says it is "totally reasonable and acceptable" for people to not want to live next door to people who speak a different language than they do

This perfectly encapsulates what the GOP position is on the shutdown.

"I signed up to defend the American people and protect the Constitution," said one Illinois National Guard member. "When we have somebody in power who's actively dismantling our rights — free speech, due process, freedom of the press — it's really hard to be a soldier right now."
A pet peeve in this article is that former Rep. Winkler falls into the trap of portraying urban people and their concerns as less genuine/practical/valid than those of the *real* folks of small town/rural America, in this case, Wisconsin. The use of “most people” in this context gets me.
I keep (naively) thinking she will come out with a clear position on the Summit project. She’s had plenty of time to learn more, it’s occurring in her House district and she lives on Summit Ave. Yet her pitch is that she will dig into the details to get things done. Seems odd.
