It seems to me that the time is ripe for a Bluesky thread about how—and maybe even why—to befriend crows.

Omg, that's what my favorite spaces are outside my family. Nice people being smart (or clever) together.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

I suspect it's both. But the pre-game entertainment is something new & I can't imagine it bringing enough donations to cover the additional costs. But what do I know.

I do know that (1) all the venerated coaches from these parts were hired young and (2) college kids ain't the same as pro athletes.

Not to mention the entertainment event that now happens before the games. Last weekend they had Ludakris (sp?) performing live.

I have a fabulous undergrad who has a lot of experience with QIIME2 & using R to analyze microbiome data. She is looking for a job starting in January. Would love to learn more bench and field skills (will be getting some in her last 2 months). Open to academic, industry, government jobs in the US.

A must-read.

From 1941, & yet, the portraits she paints... It's terrifying the people you'll instantly recognize.

The concluding paragraphs ⤵️
It’s fun—a macabre sort of fun—this parlor game of “Who Goes Nazi?” And it simplifies things—asking the question in regard to specific personalities.

Kind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi. They may be the gentle philosopher whose name is in the Blue Book, or Bill from City College to whom democracy gave a chance to design airplanes—you’ll never make Nazis out of them. But the frustrated and humiliated intellectual, the rich and scared speculator, the spoiled son, the labor tyrant, the fellow who has achieved success by smelling out the wind of success—they would all go Nazi in a crisis.

Believe me, nice people don’t go Nazi. Their race, color, creed, or social condition is not the criterion. It is something in them.

Those who haven’t anything in them to tell them what they like and what they don’t—whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi. It’s an amusing game. Try it at the next big party you go to.

Who knows what will happen now
