I remember standing on our back doorstep at dawn on the morning after the 1992 election, and Paul saying, "I'm never going to see another Labour government in my lifetime, am I?"

Were we despondent? You bet.
Labour are putting in place all of the tools and eliminating fundamental protections that will enable Reform to come in 2029 and govern in an overtly fascist and totalitarian way. No jury trials, digital ID, elimination of the ECHR etc. It feels intentional.

This will only end badly.

Can we agree that the billionaire who coordinated a network of the most powerful and connected individuals on the planet, all built on a foundation of endemic child abuse, is the problematic "elite"? Or is it still your minimum-wage barista because they have pronouns?

So the actual bar being discussed for juryless trials seems to be anything where the sentence is less than 5 years.

Anything less than 5 years would not require a jury and could be decided by a judge in a closed room.

Worth noting that 3 years is the top number for activists generally...

if you are concerned that magistrates are being given more powers and you think that the demographics of magistrates might mean that these powers are unfairly deployed, a good thing to do is to look up the qualifications to become a magistrate and to think seriously about doing that yourself

No right to determine one's own gender
No right to privacy
No right to protest
No right to jury trial
No real transfer of power when a supposedly different party is elected

Does anyone recognise what this is yet?

Perhaps naive and nostalgic of me but – was there not a point in the last decade or so when one would have expected (at least within the legal profession and the judiciary) – a far bolder defence of the rule of law?

oh Americans may not understand this, but a 'magistrate' in the UK is a local volunteer with typically no legal background. But it's ok, they receive about 10 days of training. And now they can send you to jail for two years without a jury!

I'm absolutely raging.

Motability is the one thing that has actually worked since my wife's disability and made us both feel helped and supported.

Now it's demonised because of some right-wing rags lying and 'Labour' have just gone along with it.

There are actually many, very valid, reasons that someone may choose what's classed as a "luxury" car as their Motability vehicle.

Maybe it's the only dealership close.
Maybe the layout works.
Maybe it's what they're used to.
Maybe it's the only thing they can get in/out of...

The thing about the Linehan case is that either the Judge is sympathetic to 'gender critical' ideology or British law thinks it's perfectly acceptable for a 57 year old man to stalk, doxx and physically attack a 17 year old girl.

Both explanations are horrifying.

pretty much every long-time Labour volunteer I know is seriously considering whether to vote Green or Lib Dem.
It is amazingly horrifying in how little Labour leaders have zero, even negative faith in the values that their party's supposed to stand for. I have the deepest sympathies for the party ground floor workers and supporters who're disgusted by this grotesque betrayal of their values. It's despairing.

It looks like every Irish outlet (that I've seen so far) has just transcribed a wire services report about the Linehan trial that is *dripping* with anti trans bias, misgendering the victim, calling the teenage victim an "activist" but not Linehan, and eliding the fact that the victim was a child

I don't know the criminal standard specifically but Linehan did say *in court* that he was motivated by the victim's status as a trans person. If a clear statement of explicit prejudice isn't enough then you need a new standard.
