"This is an existential crisis. 2008 was just a financial crisis, albeit the worst since the Great Depression. To the extent anyone can make predictions, we are in more perilous times than 2008 or during COVID, because you can’t row with someone you don’t trust."

Howard Green: Forget 2008 and COVID. This man-made financial crisis features a rogue president wielding a flame-thrower
The difference between prior global financial crises and today's, writes Howard Green, is that back then the world was rowing together to find solutions. Today, Trump is trying his best

Sometimes I genuinely think that we’re basically dealing with a Hitler cover band, if that makes sense.

A ceasefire is a necessary start, & I'm glad it's happening, but it's not enough.

The occupation has to end. The apartheid has to end.

There should be consequences for those complicit in the genocide, the crimes against humanity, the lies spread by western media, the arms dealing, etc. All of it.

New drought map from @agriculture.canada.ca is out. "At the end of the month, 85% of the country was classified as Abnormally Dry (D0) or Moderate to Extreme Drought (D1 to D3), including 76% of the country's agricultural landscape."

The lady in the waiting room asked me to guard her package of homemade chicken soup while she uses the loo. (She's taking the soup to her kids.) Me?? Guard the chicken soup?? She's gonna come back to empty jars, and me, gone.

I may not entirely agree with the choice of Peace Prize winner. But the committee retains its dignity and my respect. In fact, my respect has increased, because I think this was a choice calculated to send Trump's detractors a message of international support should they rise up.

Good point. I don't know the history of the peace prize but I think there have been similar instances. Bishop TuTu comes to mind.

'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said as it announced Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Right before the opera began tonight, the orchestra played O Canada and everyone stood and sang. I don’t recall that happening before. It felt a bit jingoistic, but I guess that’s what we all need right now. I’m glad they did it.

Wow, cool! This was a really interesting production. Almost all stark grey and harsh lighting. Wonderful performances.

Huh! I’ll investigate. Although I’ve already got 3 more operas and 2 symphonies to go to. Getting crammed!
