Saturday evening, Nov. 22nd, 2025, I had to make the painful decision to put Trenta to sleep. The night before I paused funding. I took a long while to update you all as I needed some time, and also wanted to get through Thanksgiving.

I thank you all. You made
Yep. Explains the outrageous comment that the actual winner of the last election, hiding for her life, is somehow not popular enough to take over. That and no doubt because she got the Nobel Peace Prize. But mainly for authoritarian besties.
So it was less a daring raid per se than the USA being invited to do the dirty work in an internal coup?
"Senior Venezuelan government officials, led by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez...have quietly promoted a series of initiatives in recent months aimed at presenting themselves to Washington as a “more acceptable” alternative to Nicolás Maduro’s regime...funneled through intermediaries in Qatar."

Folks bypass things like the fact that NYPD activated drones and 30 cop cars for a demonstration of 1000 people in freezing weather today. The levels of surveillance and potential repression are taken as regular order in this country.

How are voters meant to understand how serious things are if in lieu of shouting fire AND going into building with hoses, you're simply posting fire safety suggestions on social media?

IMO "war for oil" frame risks glossing over A) deeper history & politics around the US in LatAm, & B) the fact that the US doesn't actually control its oil companies—we're one of the few major oil producers on the planet where the state doesn't exercise much decision-making power over that industry

Like the Iraq War, I think it's wrong to understand this as a "war for oil," but it's not NOT (on some level) *about* oil—just not, seemingly, the actual interests of the US oil industry

one of the dumbest parts of this is the idea that oil producers actually want their holdings in venezeula back, which they do not. it’s a war for oil no one really wants.

Andor is the best TV show of 2025.

It is probably the best Star Wars of all Star Wars.

I rarely say something this definitive, but it basically *has* to win a Hugo.

Genuinely think some of the people who keep saying "it's a distraction" are unconsciously reacting to the fact that Trump and his idiot admin never have a plan, so they invent a "plan" to try to make it make sense

The US produces >13 mn barrels of oil per day. Venezuela produces <1 million bpd

There's a global oil glut i.e. lower prices. That's bad for US producers, who need higher prices to break even. Hard to imagine they're eager to make big new investments in an unstable place w/ decrepit infrastructure

It's driving me to distraction that news outlets, including even the BBC, are describing Mamdani's midnight swearing in in the station as taking place in an "...abandoned subway station."

You mean the nonetheless HISTORIC Old City Hall subway station that's meticulously preserved?
