FWIW, we've had Americans without passports come to the Canadian border and ask for asylum and be permitted to enter (and in at least one case I'm aware of, be granted a work permit while waiting the years for an eligibility decision)

Big risk to take, but if you can fill out a Basis of Claim form

We know we're being hosed, we used to cross the border to pick up packages shipped to PO boxes and shop for groceries, gas, etc regularly to avoid the "Canada Surcharge"

1:1 currency conversion is incredibly appealing. WIll only be an empty promise, but people will jump at the chance.

Living up here and paying higher than American prices for most goods while earning Canadian "seven tenths" dollars is an ever present stressor for us. Like your entire adult life.

And that's before sales tax and price fixing by 3 oligarchs who have an effective monopoly on groceries between them.
