"Men are disturbed not by events, but by the view that they take of them"

Epictetus
I have one. Voters make decisions based on the ideas in their heads and their beliefs about the world, and those ideas and beliefs are heavily shaped by their social interactions, especially media consumption, and in the last 20 years most media consumption is from social media's sea of lies.
I don't think center left or left or center pundits have put forward a single coherent explanation of the 2016 election following the 2024 election as literally all of their theories of the 2016 election were disproven by the Biden term.

Remarkable that for decades of talk about moving beyond American unipolarity and dominance, at the precise moment when it would be most suitable to do so, it's not happening

We're the Indispensable Nation, whether we like it or not.
Applications to what new research positions tbh, Europe isn't funding.

I still can't believe they're trying to make a war happen out of thin air. Not just their abrogation of Congress's role in formally declaring a war -- that's been a slippery slope for decades -- but their total unwillingness even to go through the motions of drumming up public support.

In the Margin Call boardroom scene Jeremy Irons has that bit about "Do you know why they pay me the big bucks? Because it's my job to think about what the music will sound like a month, 3 months, a year from now..." and a lot of analysis and reports are mostly about informing that decision.

The thing is, they probably could have gotten away with the Oligarchic Aristocracy if they weren't also aggressively committed to the Ostentatiously Virulent Racism

The former can remain invisible to most for a very long time; the second poisons everything immediately
TRUMP: “I said why is it we only take people from shithole countries? Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, Denmark… But we always take people from Somalia— places that are filthy, dirty, disgusting.”

Such a mystery what he means when he says this stuff, isn’t it?

One needn't use the term "Trade School" derisively to describe what is being created here... That is just straightforwardly what it is. The institution is insisting it will train its students with specific technical job skills

That's not a *bad thing,* per se, but a *College Education*, it is not
There are a lot of big questions at play here, but the most fundamental might be: what is the point of college?

“I look down at the crashing swell. Alone at the after-party, a kind of honeymoon in hell. I am on the list, a bit of grave misfortune. I am in the New York Post, even worse. The ink is black, the pages yellow. Everything, some kind of lie. What of doubt? Scientists cannot see the soul.”
