Guess what? Key to Vancouver's transit recovery was not raising fares and cutting the service.

"I would emphasize frequency. Running the bus every 30 minutes isn’t going to cut it if you want to grow ridership. With 30-minute service, if one bus doesn’t show up it’s now 60-minute service."

I’m inclined to agree: spending taxpayer money on Lansdowne 2.0 hardly seems like the most pragmatic option, considering so many higher-priority needs like transit, infrastructure upgrades, road and sidewalk maintenance, pedestrian safety upgrades, the list goes on…

We hit the streets to ask Ottawans what they think about Lansdowne 2.0.

I'm looking forward to, "when the president talks about reductions, he phrases in terms of the percentage increase needed to restore things".

aka alternative percentages, where numbers lose all meaning.

And it’s great that Ottawa’s new Chief Planner Marcia Wallace is one of the guest speakers for today’s event, alongside some pretty exciting voices in Canadian architecture and urban design.

It is one thing to ask for provincial funding for Ottawa's LRT, quite another to give the Province control over it. People in Toronto will be making decisions here about schedules, fares, when & how extensions would be made, not people in Ottawa who the LRT serves. #ottcity

Climate Keith says this is likely going nowhere:

1. Before anyone gets too excited about (another) Keystone XL revival, this looks like an attempt to curry favour with Trump that will go nowhere. The company behind KXL (TC Energy spin-off South Bow) tried to relaunch it earlier this year...

The lack of transparency is very concerning -- the public can have no confidence that decisions, such as running a 10 minute off peak service on line 1, are not primarily in the interests of RTM -- it's the only explanation that makes sense given the small amount of money saved.

Emails back and forth between OCTranspo and Metrolinx, who in turn contract out work to Accenture.
There is also a 6% levy on Presto fares.
Adding another layer of bureaucracy is not what is needed.
gotu.bsky.social
Metrolinx are responsible for Presto.
When credit card payments were introduced they capped fares at daily and monthly rates.
It took Presto two years to cap fares at the monthly rate, they still don't have a daily cap.
I did an FOI request to see what was going on....

We can do so much better than a bunch of delivery vehicles.
Hubs across the city and a low speed automated network, which doubles as active transport network.
If you want your street on the network, give up a lane.

If I was a Mayor of a G7 capital wanting to reinvigorate down town, support local businesses and create a balanced transport system for a climate crisis...

Imagine if every city had an efficient delivery network.
Go to a store, buy something and no need to carry it home.
How many car journeys could that save?

You promised to fix transit and plant a million trees and did neither.
What concrete actions are you taking to make sure this is not another empty promise?
Why 2030, why did you wait until now to start addressing this important issue?

“When Sutcliffe came to office at the start of 2023, the City of Ottawa reserves stood at $663 million. By the end of 2024, they will be down to $436 million. He’s draining $227 million from reserves”

If finances are so strong, why are you raiding the reserves?

You might think that the mayor of Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's vast Northwest Territories, would be a fan of giant pickups.

Nope. He's disgusted by car bloat.

Imagine if all our politicians did this everyday. We would have world-class service.

All the nagging issues of cheapness and inattention to detail would slowly melt away like your brain cells from the Rideau fumes 😊

Good initiative.

Across Ottawa, from fairs and markets to townhalls and meetings, I’ve been hearing the same thing: people are frustrated and want a new direction for our city. We need a city that works, with reliable transit, strong services, repaired roads and community centres.

I am sure I am not alone in that cops generally make me feel less safe.

More cops indicates a failing city.

If you want a safe thriving city invest in bus drivers, not cops.

Montreal’s multitudinous successes in pedestrianization are more than enough evidence to Ottawa to embark on its examples of what can happen when we transform our streets into places for people. 1/

NEW: 1km of Montreal’s Ste-Catherine Street will become permanently “pedestrian only” (less than perfect term since it will be a people-place for a LOT more than walking). 225+ new trees, vegetation-covered pits for rain drainage, more seating, illuminated canopy, financial help for businesses, etc.
Stretch of Ste-Catherine Street East to become pedestrian-only year-round | CBC News
The City of Montreal announced Friday their "ambitious" plans to transform a portion of Ste-Catherine Street East into a pedestrian road year-round, with redevelopment work starting in fall 2026.

A reminder that today is Michaelmas, on which day in parts of Ireland rent could be paid in geese. If you’re due to pay rent this month, please consider setting a very irritated goose on your landlord in lieu of payment, in the name of upholding important Irish traditions.
