I’m very thankful to Stephanie Maltarich at @cires.colorado.edu for this writeup about efforts to reform how scientific fieldwork operates. To make it less hostile & exclusionary, and *actually* safer.

From our research talks @ AGU about this subject. The work is ongoing. #disability 🧪
CIRES researchers challenge the status quo to make field research safer and more inclusive. New frameworks address both exclusionary policies and recommendations for hostile behaviors that occur once they get there: buff.ly/nn5rcMo #fieldwork #CIRES 📷 Lianna Nixon
I need to take a break from social media until the new cool-kid trend of “screenshotting old academics discussing dating high school girls” thing blows over.

I close the app n’ feel like I gotta scrub myself with a cup of borax soap. Ew.

How to Film ICE
Filming federal agents in public is legal, but avoiding a dangerous—even deadly—confrontation isn’t guaranteed. Here’s how to record ICE and CBP agents as safely as possible and have an impact.

I love the notes of subversion. A la…

“Fuck your false binary choice. It’s the system that’s broken, and we know how to break that system. Reject the binary harm-is-inevitable options fed to you. Look for ways to do better.”

Also. Go organized labor.

Yeah, we do, indeed, need this. We don’t deserve it, but —whoa— do we need this.

I see colleagues quote-dunking and blocking each other over the usage + definition of “sand” today.

I’d encourage everyone to go out and touch some low-growing plants that have slender straight leaves.

It’s actually the opposite of what most people want. They want their local PDs to have NOTHING to do with these gestapo thugs (not providing them data nor logistics support), and Schumer’s like

“But how ‘bout if we require it? Thanks for the compromise! 👋”

I guess all I’m saying, never underestimate a career politician’s ability to sound “deeply concerned” about something people are upset about, while doing absolutely nothing (🚫, nada) to change it one iota.

He has very real power, but is using none of it so far.

Until then? Fuck off, Rand Paul. 🗑️
January 28, 2026 at 5:46 PM
Not really. Rand Paul is Chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. He could start issuing subpoenas *today* and holding hearings by end-of-week.

But instead he’s standing in front of a camera going “This is bad, somebody should really do something.”

Yeah, I’m not sure honestly (I’m no lawyer). It sounds like they probably need a lawyer, but I know that’s not a free option (sigh). I’m really sorry that’s happening to them.

When I had a collections agency pulling BS on me over a bill they couldn’t provide any information about what the original good/service was, I started writing our state-level Sec of State office who handles fraud complaints. Mine was a small bill, but the agency dropped it entirely in the end.

The moment he tries to go on a hot mic again he needs to get booed and shut down so hard they’ve no choice but to fire him.

💯
He does exactly that two posts down in his lil thread.

“I’ll admit I was wrong in precisely one case; but I remain the smarter one here and you need to publicly recognize that.”

Tomorrow he’s write another article about how all the fascism is BlueSky’s fault actually for not being nicer to him.

U.S. law enforcement was founded on slave patrols. And they absolutely killed white people at the time (“race traitors”) who got in their way. Tactics and protected interests are the same as today.

It’s an accurate analogy. Adopting right-wing language deriding “identity politics” doesn’t help.

Congrats on the own-goal. You’re his target audience.

If I wanted screenshots of all-the-worst-people’s hot takes from Twitter, I’d re-create my Twitter account.

I know vapid rage-bait is effective for engagement, but it’s become a new habit of mine to unfollow people who post screenshots from X just to dunk. Even if I agree with you. It’s annoying.
