There's a large percentage of ICE and Border Patrol receuits with prior military or law enforcement experience who already fit the "us vs. them" culture of these agencies.
They see immigrants, darker-skinned people, leftists, and queers as invaders β not fully human and deserving of abuse.

It's more accurate to say that ICE and Border Patrol are easy jobs for people who did their "four and the door" military service.
Federal 1811's (criminal investigators with HSI or DEA) tend to come from the Navy. Border Patrol is heavily favored by former Marines.

I'm not sure where this idea comes from that ICE and Border Patrol couldn't hack it in the "real" military. The data does not support this; in fact both of these agencies recruit heavily from the military. A very large number of Border Patrol agents and Deportation Officers are former infantry.

Two white friends tail me home if it's outside the hours when people are out and about. I'm damn near third generation Minnesotan. It's not just "you're a citizen you'll be fine." I'm a black woman alone. Who knows what they will do.
I donβt think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.
