Great point from @mjtoma.bsky.social: Millions of us absolutely do see what's happening to the USA.

"We are horrified, shocked, enraged, and ashamed. We are acting, in a thousand ways, to oppose it. This cannot, and will not, be how the United States ends."

Goldman: “We estimate that seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims increased to about 235k for the week ended October 4th, by combining the Department of Labor (DOL)’s pre-released seasonal factors with this afternoon’s release of state-level claims.”

It's time we kick medical practitioners off the university campus and deny them the term "doctor" while we're at it.

Some exciting news: 404 Media just won a grant via Muckrock to investigate book bans and educational censorship in the U.S. The plan is to file hundreds of public records requests around the country and to report on and archive all the documents for public use:

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

I want to remind everybody that it is extremely not normal for academics to “flee” the United States.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Yes, kids must read outside of school. Educators know this, sometimes tell parents/caregivers, who sometimes have the resources/interest/time to promote home reading. Estimates of kids' reading (aka print/text exposure) predict reading skill big time. One example from the research lit: rdcu.be/eJTI3

66% of US companies “have already passed through up to 50% of tariff costs” to customers, per KPMG’s latest Tariff Pulse Survey, which polled 300 US-based C-suite and business leaders of companies with annual revenue exceeding $1 billion.

@cantb.bsky.social and I shared some thoughts/concerns about the proposed higher education compact in this @chronicle.com piece. But I still think that quite a few red-state publics would sign up, if for no other reason than state legislatures would expect it.
Trump Says Signing a New ‘Compact’ Will Benefit Colleges’ Finances. It Could Also Do the Opposite.
Despite the promise of more federal dollars, several provisions could upend an already precarious business model.

The advantages of unionization are obvious, so why don’t more workers join unions?

Employer-led union suppression strategies are a key explanatory factor.

Given what I've heard from undergrads, it seems a lot of K-12 schools no longer assign novels, especially outside AP classes. Instead, it's all anthologies or even digital anthologies (like Savvas offers) that come with read-aloud options so that kids never have to engage directly with the text.
