Grazalema, Spain, received over 2,000 mm (78 inches) of rain in just the last 20 days.

Over a year’s worth of rain — and it’s only early February. This is hydrologically absurd.

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

THE EPSTEIN CLASS
Ossoff: We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. It’s the wealthiest Cabinet ever. This is the Epstein class. They are the elites they pretend to hate.

This is an important point.

Empathy—in and of itself—is anti-fascist.

The arts—and the project of higher education as a whole—teach empathy, enabling you to put yourself in other people’s shoes.

So to a fascist, they must be destroyed.
The war on empathy and the war on the arts are part of the same project.

I feel exactly the same way about all of the scientists who were RIF’d or had their funding denied.

The ripple effects are enormous and will undermine public health for decades to come.

It will take a beat for the general public to see it, but it’s coming.
One more comment on the Post debacle: this hurts journalism broadly. Good journalists will go do something else. The rest will be fighting for fewer jobs and everyone will earn less. Fewer people will take up the career. The damage done is to the ecosystem, as well as the paper.

If you think this list of demands equals capitulation I'm left with no choice but to believe you would rather Chuck Schumer just stand on the Senate floor screaming "ABOLISH ICE! ABOLISH ICE! ABOLISH ICE!" until magically Trump isn't President anymore.
SENATE AND HOUSE DEMOCRATS ARE UNITED ON REINING IN THE ABUSES OF ICE

Americans have watched in horror as ICE has terrorized communities across the country

Federal agents can’t continue to cause chaos in our cities while more Americans are killed

We must rein in ICE

Here’s what we're demanding:

Questions about child rape and pedophile sex trafficking rings should be fun, right? Why wouldn't you smile while you're talking about victims? Don't be one of those of those angry liberal women, smile sweetly and be sure to fix your hair and makeup.
Vance: There was a moment in the Oval Office, I wasn't even in there, but Trump was talking to Kaitlan Collins. Trump says, 'Why don't you ever smile?' And it's actually, like, so perceptive. Have some fun.

He cannot be clearer. There is no difference to him between bombing random fishermen on boats and shooting Americans protesters in the face
I swear this clip is not edited. Trump pivots from downplaying the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti ("two people out of tens of thousands and you get bad publicity") to in the very next breath claiming "we've been very tough on the waters," leaving Tom Llamas baffled ("the waters?")

When democracies go authoritarian, elections are usually one of the last bits to fall. It usually starts with the judiciary, free media, police and prosecutors, crackdowns on the opposition on bullshit corruption charges. Chavez, Erdogan etc all faced electoral setbacks on their way to dictatorship.
JUST IN: Democrats flip a red seat in the Texas Senate.

Taylor Rehmet wins against Leigh Wambsganss, a conservative activist who helped lead right-wing efforts to take over TX school boards.

With all early vote, and 95% of precincts, in, Dem up 57/43.

Trump won this seat by 17% in Tarrant County.

New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

Trump launched an affordability-focused midterm campaign for Republicans this week, traveling to Iowa to give a speech about how good his presidency has been for the cost of living.

That's going about as well as you'd think. Here POTUS is saying he is going to keep housing prices high.
Trump: "People that own their homes -- we're gonna keep them wealthy. We're gonna keep those prices up. We're not gonna destroy the value of their homes so that somebody who didn't work very hard can buy a home."

So I realize there are certainly local politicians who have this aim in practice, but has there ever been a political figure at the national level who openly declared their desire to make homeownership more expensive and unattainable?
