My annual Christmas trivia: Frank Capra was a Caltech graduate and lifelong science guy who told a biographer that had he not gone into film, he might have wanted to be an astronomer. When Capra was Academy president in 1937, he invited Edwin and Grace Hubble to be special guests at the Oscars.

Just sit with this for a moment, Virginia:

Data centers have avoided paying $2.7 billion in state taxes — including $1 billion last year alone — through state incentives.

Data centers are getting the lion's share of state incentives despite supporting few long-term jobs, per the report.

this feels like another iteration of the "what if I give a homeless man money and he buys booze" thing. So then he bought booze, so what, you are not his personal life coach. You did your bit now go live your life.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

Thousands of people gathered Tuesday near Beirut’s destroyed port where Pope Leo XIV celebrated a waterfront Mass. It was an extraordinary end to his first international trip as head of the Roman Catholic Church, which he used to deliver a message of peace to a tumultuous region. trib.al/QaoHdq9

Cold Moon
Super Full Moon in Gemini

The last full moon before the Solstice, a time of introspection, renewal, and the opportunity to reflect on the past year as you get ready for the new year.

This timing makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it?

Adm. Alvin Holsey resigned in October as commander of U.S. Southern Command right after flagging concerns about those U.S. military strikes on “suspected” drug boats in the Caribbean.

He served for 37 years.

Jacob Frey: "If we are now at the point where the federal govt is deploying agents on legal American citizens with a goal of uprooting people who have formed lives here, have families here, started businesses here, definitively made Minneapolis a better place, everybody should be speaking out."

This story sums up Trump: No need for evidence. No need for laws or treaties. No need for discussions. If Trump decides (based upon whatever random information or maybe just heartburn) that someone is in the wrong, he believes he has the right to kill them.

The US is now a rogue nation.

TN07 is a story about gerrymandering: the GOP cracked Nashville into 3 districts when it redrew the 2022 map, destroying the Dem seat there.

Fast-forward: a section of Nashville, which just 5 years ago had a Dem representative, is now voting Dem by huge margins but it's been designed to not matter.

83 murders...so far...just amongst Venezuelan boaters.

In what is, I'm sure, completely unrelated news: Venezuela has approximately 303 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, which is the largest amount in the world.

Under a dark sky, the Milky Way looks like a bright band interrupted by black rivers.

Those rivers are not empty space; they are curtains of tiny dust grains that swallow nearly all the starlight trying to reach us.

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.
