I'm rereading Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey, for the first time in probably 20 years

Holds up pretty well considering

Tolkien is not perfect but he did, in fact, hate the fucking Nazis.
DHS just posted a Lord of the Rings meme as an appeal to join ICE
Hello!

Just finished Sistah Samurai by Tatiana Obey, which starts as a gonzo genre mashup and ends as a powerful affirmation of survival

Just started Priest of the Gallows by Peter McLean, the third in the War for the Rose Throne low fantasy, with great characters and voice
Good governance and financial controls are an ethical issue and protect your employees, not some sort of overreach of authority or mistrust of them
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
Hello!

Struggling with reading focus lately so still on Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

But I've got to get a move on because book club is on Tuesday!

quick question which category do the AI psychosis and suicide cases fall under
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.
So good, especially book 2

I read these first a long time before Penric and Desdemona came out

If you haven't read the Vorkosigan books, please do! Start with Cordelia's Honour
Chaucer is the best, also the layers of irony and pastiche

But also Pearl I adore
Exactly

And incoherent

I found that medievalists either loved Malory and Piers Plowman (clearly wrong) or Chaucer and the Pearl poet (clearly correct)
Malory's Morte D'Arthur is tedious rubbish

Come and meet us in a pub to have dinner and a drink and talk about this fascinating book

Also the AI literally can't learn narrative logic, it's a plausibility generator

So it can do "What's a plausible next scene?", but not "Make this whole thing hang together"
I stopped half way through season 2 because the dialogue was so terrible

Like, the actors were giving it a good go but
English BA, Medieval studies MA

Now a financial consultant charging a high day rate advising organisations, or working as interim Finance Director, etc, and spending half of what I earn on books and art supplies
Trouble the Saints by Alaya Dawn Johnson?

Possibly some of Max Gladstone's latest stuff?

And yes the Jade City trilogy

I am very excited that ALL OF US MURDERERS has been picked as one of Kobo's Best of the Month!

It's out everywhere today, in e at all platforms, in print at all good bookshops (it's the BA Indie Book of the Month!) and in audio read by Sonny Archer. Have at it!

Hello!

Just started Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti

Lesbian Regency romcom where a best-selling lady novelist is trying to find her plagiarist (I'm guessing will also be the love interest)
I've read this one and loved it! (Also An Academic Affair, last week)

Sadly the first two in this series aren't available in Britain for whatever silly publishing house reason, so I haven't read those yet
Morning!

I've been off reading for the last few days due to life stuff, but I'm hoping to get back to it soon

The book I'm part way through is The Great Orchid Heist by Eleanor Vendrell, a lesbian heist (obviously) romance involving stealing a rare orchid from the equivalent of Kew Gardens

Even back in the 70s and 80s when I could be hassled by the police for walking while trans, no one ever tried to stop me pissing in the Ladies or tried to make me change into my swimsuit among men.

There is no dignity or respect involved in taking away rights I have exercised freely for forty years
I absolutely love fanfic culture and the unhinged joy and creativity

It's the fun of being weird little creatures together

IMO this takes all the joy out, and the creativity is filed down to lowest common denominator bland

Thousands of Londoners have indefinite leave to remain.

They have legal rights and are our friends, neighbours and colleagues, contributing hugely to our city.

Threatening to deport people living and working here legally is unacceptable.

Hello!

I am reading my first ever light novel, Spice & Wolf by Isuna Hasekura, tr Paul Starr

I picked it up due to a recommendation saying the series has a really in depth discussion of fantasy economics

So far lots of fun, the wolf goddess hiding naked in the trader's cart to escape captivity
Coming in late but: Michelle West's Essalieyan multi-series epic, still going strong

Amazing world and characters, real depth, masterclass in writing a sexist society without writing a sexist book

Just beautiful
