Chuck Schumer declares he will "reform ICE to stop the killings of Americans because no other police department in America is allowed to do that."

US police annually kill 1500 to 2000 people, every single year.

Either Schumer is that incompetent or maliciously lying.

Please Replace Him ASAP.

The night before the layoffs, they were up late working on this thing, in case they lost their jobs and access to our internal systems in the morning.

I cannot fathom better colleagues. I am immensely grateful for everything they did to bring this to life.

I cannot stand the "this is a good start" discourse. The Democrats in Congress do not want to abolish ICE. They have proposed a series of bog-standard reforms regurgitated by a think tank. Everyone knows they do not work. The Democrats supporting this do not care. They just want to move on.

Okay, if states start aggressively charging all of DHS's crimes, who's defending the agents? Fed trial attorney numbers are down significantly, and their caseloads are also up significantly?

I'm going to assume Minnesota has some sort of FOIA law and that some journalist has already submitted one to show that MnDOT crossed off thousands of "Abolish ICE" submissions.

Pretty wild to me how many pundits and academics treated Republican opposition to the notion of Supreme Court expansion during the Biden administration as a serious, principled stance, as opposed to a position Republicans would obviously abandon the moment it became convenient
Republicans Love Supreme Court Expansion When It Gets Them What They Want
When it comes to state supreme courts, Republican politicians have been happy to add (or subtract) justices as they see fit.

This is true, and the main issue is that the caucus leadership, by being actively antagonistic towards both the left and militant liberals, has seriously undermined the relationship of trust you need to pull off this kind of maneuvering.
Hot take: people saying
1) "this is tactically well-calibrated going to make a big difference for immigrants and rapid responders" vs.

2) "this is not good enough, we need to abolish ICE, and we can't trust D leadership"

Are both correct, and both groups play an important part of our ecosystem.

The big tech founder whose 417-foot, $500 million superyacht needs a 256-foot, $75 million superyacht to "shadow" it -- because the bigger yacht lacks a helipad -- had to cut his paper's newsroom almost in half, for reasons
NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.

Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

This is pretty fucked up. I mean, I know *everything* is pretty fucked up, but -- a polite email leading to the Feds putting the weight of their metaphorical thumb down on you feels like another degree of awfulness ratcheting up.
Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.

It’s extremely bad for the prospects of our democracy that the sole small-d democratic party has an incentive to keep a fascist party held only just in abeyance instead of casting it permanently outside the bounds of legitimate politics
It really bums me out that Klobuchar, who was instrumental in normalizing Trump as just another political adversary, is almost certainly going to be the next governor of Minnesota, a state currently paying a severe price for that normalization of fascism.
Here's all the Klobuchar v. Republican matchups from that SurveyUSA poll

Best Klobuchar lead is +20, worst is +14

Klobuchar was the only Dem to speak at Trump's second inauguration. She spoke of the peaceful transfer of power, even after Trump attempted a self-coup to stop exactly that.

She pivots to talking about grocery prices during Trump's ongoing attempts at turning this country fascist. She's not good.
