In 1976 my partner got a job at a computer company, and he showed me round the computer gallery which was about the size of a basketball court, and the single computer filled the whole room. It was probably less powerful than a robot vacuum cleaner.

This type of conservative thinking imagines learning to be linear; in this instance that someone with A-Level English will be more fluent in English than someone with GCSE English, or a reading age of 11, when in actual fact they’ll just be better at analysing why you’re wrong to assume that.

We were too poor to have a phone, so I still have memorised the number of the neighbours in the flat downstairs, where we would knock in emergencies and ask if we could use theirs.
