'Tánaiste Simon Harris has said AI is ... “here to stay” ...'

He's not wrong, you know. Technologies can't be uninvented.

What he's actually saying is that he's going to allow Generative AI vendors to do as much damage as they can to the economy and to labour.
Tánaiste Simon Harris has said AI is “no longer a concept” and is “here to stay” following a recent visit to San Francisco.

Harris said that as he travelled though San Francisco, he was “struck” by the “unavoidable reality” of how AI is “woven into daily life”.

After a year, the EU is moving backwards on digital rights.

The new EU mandate was supposed to defend digital rights, but what we are seeing instead is a wave of harmful deregulation and a rise in surveillance that puts people at risk.

One year on, the EU is abandoning human rights
A year into its new mandate and the European Commission is reversing course when it comes to safeguarding human rights in the EU.

There are European tech regulators independent of the EU institutions with powerful Instruments: the Data Protection Supervisory Authorities. They are well-armed, but could be funded stronger. They just need to act.
It reads like Washington’s worst nightmare: a European tech regulator independent of the EU institutions and armed to crack down on the violations of U.S. companies.

But that’s exactly what some in Brussels say is now needed.
US pressure revives call for powerful EU tech regulator
Europe’s maze of rules and regulators is in sharp focus as Brussels grapples with X’s AI tool Grok.

Interessant, wie unterschiedlich Grönland aussehen kann (und wie klein es in Wahrheit ist):
The super talented @pokateo.bsky.social made this for map nerds to demonstrate how projections can change how we see the map. Little known at the time it was also the reason for the dumbest president ever to destroy NATO.

Faschismus muss man auch im Bademantel bekämpfen:
Every time the Trump regime uses the words "funded protesters" and "outside agitators" news outlets need to cut to this photo from last week.

ICE has invaded these communities. Outside agitators don't show up in their fucking bathrobes.

Das Recht auf einen Anwalt wird gerade übrigens auch durch die deutsche Bundesregierung bei Abschiebungen eingeschränkt. Ein Anfang wird so gemacht.
"We need to move away from a system predicated on violence in favor of one that centers people's humanity. We need to ensure that every human in the [US] facing a legal process – including deportation – has access to a lawyer ... And we need to divest from the logic that violence makes us safer."
“Abolish ICE” isn’t radical, it doesn’t go far enough.

Same for Europe
Carney should bring back the Digital Services Tax asap.

US tech oligarchies extract huge revenues from the Canadian economy while undermining our democracy and independence.
When countries get hooked on US tech, their governments are constrained in reining in tech’s harms while most of the economic benefits accrue to the United States.

It’s time to break out of that trap — but that means challenging the Silicon Valley model, not creating our own digital colonizers.
