Periodic reminder that it is a common cyberpunk trope that the internet has already completely collapsed into ruins under the weight of scams and spam and malware at least once before the story actually begins.

Do you know how much of the cover price goes to a trad published writer? About 10-15%.

The various types of indie pub get a higher percentage (but have to do more work with virtually zero publicity budget).

How many publishers have been put out of business by piracy? Not a lot. Writers, tho'...

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Last call, writing the article today. Any comic creators or publishers running black friday sales, emphasis on indie comics creators.

Please share and link any Indie Comics Black Friday sales
Will anyone be doing a Black Friday sale on a website where People sell their comics? (I.e. personal website, ko-fi, etc) @comicbookyeti.com

I actually gasped when I saw that this resource guide was put out there to help folks. *That's* what I'm talking about.

Librarians are the freaking best, y'all. Book it. Done.
Sometimes I think it’s going to be the librarians who will save us all.

I'm gonna use Brazil as an example. Minimum wage in Brazil is 1518 BRL, which translates to roughly 282 USD. That is paid monthly and the average work time per week is 44h.

Considering a minimum wage of 7.25 USD/h on the US, if we do the count the way we do in Brazil, that would be 1276 per month +
You can go on the localized marketplaces and search for your genre to see what things are priced as, you can look at the minimum wage of places and find what percentage would be equivalent to your US price, you can ask on social media for help ^^ I can speak for the Brazilian Market, for example

Just sharing this again...I'm like 30 subscribers away from my goal for 2025 (free & paid). With losing my part-time job, I'd love to be able to focus on what I love while I figure out the rest. Any shares/subs would very much be appreciated. Thanks. 🖤
Anyway, in the wake of the job loss news, I just wanted to share my site because I’d love to get up to 365 subscribers for the year (free & paid) & if you dig what I do, maybe you’ll want to upgrade your subscription someday: from-the-desk-of-the-horror-chick.ghost.io

Shares appreciated- thx!

Obviously there are historical analogies - in the UK, penny dreadful, Victorian/Edwardian serialised fiction, etc

But the sheer VOLUME of (sometimes) bloated texts - the very long novel, the 30-book series - is definitely pegged to conditions created by our current digital-capitalist ecosystem

I hadn't thought about minimum wage, thank you. I've been trying to localize my prices, but it seems like there's a *lot* of variation on the international marketplaces, especially when you throw in big States publishers who converted the prices without localizing

Can you explain how to do that? I know how to set prices, but how do I know what's affordable in each place?

Localize your prices. If you are indie, you (most likely) set your own prices. If you do that, people outside the english market are more likely to be able to buy your books (mainly ebooks)
I don't know a lot about the book market outside the US or languages other than English, so I would love to hear ideas (this is what it sounds like when I ask for advice) about sourcing discounted books elsewhere.

So many people say to boycott the Zon, and then don't do the work to buy elsewhere. I have my books wide, but most of my sales are still on the Zon. My sales stop on the Zon? I bring in basically nothing or pocket change from all other sources. You can't only do half the work here.
November 25, 2025 at 5:45 PM
There's some work involved in supporting indie authors and 'buying wide'.

Follow your favourite authors.
Subscribe to their newsletters.
Check if they sell books and ebooks direct from their own online shops.
Build up your shopping bookmarks.

If you support indie authors, then support them!
Please remember when boycotting the Zon, most indie book stores do not carry a lot of actual indie authors, and you're mostly supporting the already popular bestsellers that are safe for bookstores to carry. Self-published and indie authors need your support more than ever around this time.

"I think the best strategy in the age of AI is: bet on yourself… unique work made well with huge amounts of love is actually going to become more valuable in the AI era." A very heartening story about the brilliant Naomi Alderman buying back “Zombies, Run!” www.pcgamer.com/gaming-indus...
Finally some good buyout news: A writer just bought back the game she co-created from a blockchain company so it 'doesn’t end up being turned into AI slop'
Novelist and game writer Naomi Alderman has bought back the rights to the Zombies, Run! exercise app she's been writing episodes of for more than a decade.

so, let me bring the question back: what is the most useless piece of video game knowledge you know?
