A thread on what helps a person be brave and stand up for what's right, in spite of risks.

One problem that seems common among elites is that they expect there to be some way to take on fascism that is easy and risk-free, which is absolutely delusional.

I haven't had the capacity to keep up with moderation lists for a bit, but this one is really obvious, so I'm stealing some energy from Future Me: a list for the extremely obvious wave of inauthentic accounts following today's newly-created US gov accounts

Remember when i said we're living in the scariest parts of a Gibson novel thanks to a bunch of dudes who misunderstand Gibson's novels?

Well now I want to discuss the verified govt accounts spewing rightwing propaganda— possibly via a bot-run troll farm— & why you should block them for your safety.

Indeed, our local protest had booths from orgs spanning the grand coalition, from PSL through DSA and community defense organizers to Indivisible and local Democratic Party committees. And they were all busy handing out contact cards and calls to action!
For the “aha, but will those protesters get involved in other organizing??” skeptics…Boston No Kings had a big row of booths providing info + sign-up sheets for a bunch of local activism and political organizations. I have seen similar at other 50501 events.

(Which you’d know if you went to one..)
I think some of the people on social media sneering at the No Kings protesters are just mad that those normies with signs are way better shitposters than they are

At the rally I attended, a Democratic House member was present with her staff, urging people to vote in California’s upcoming election and distributing huge stacks of “know your rights” cards for people attending the protest to pass on to vulnerable community members.

We had a lot of people signing up for our newsletter at our protest. I was honestly surprised because we are all so often overwhelmed by email. But people WANT to do something; we just need some strong leaders and direction.

Local protest here had a dozen+ groups table’ing ranging from DSA/YDSA, Pro-Palestine orgs, various environmental groups, 50501, indivisible, to the local Democratic Party.

A lot of people will sign up and find their niche, it takes time to build movements.

it is really something that 'creating a bunch of bsky accounts to try and trigger the libs' is the first & only coordinated action where all of the cabinet-level agencies are on the same page.
You should block the MAGA government-created Bluesky accounts.

Do not engage them.

Do not give them a single scrap of what they want.

There is a lot that happens off-line and its important to never forget that. You are only seeing what you put yourself in a position to see.

Large, calm gatherings are a great place to learn more and there is plenty to learn about.

organizing is downstream of introductions. you just have to say hi to people. you just have to be in a place where there are lots of people to say hi to

I think its genuinely a virtue to accept that you could be wrong about anything and kill the part of yourself that needs to always be seen as correct and smarter than others on any given topic
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

if you think that the protest signs at No Kings are mostly just anodyne Facebook-Resistance-Blue Wave meme level work, I can tell you haven’t actually attended one of these things
Yeah that's a problem that should get fixed.
I was trying to say that your first point, that police departments are institutions created by Democrats, is wrong. Unless you meant the pro-slavery Democrats of the 1800s.

Elected Democrats continue to fund police but their origins are more complex and not partisan.

I have always believed that we would win in the end, but today, surrounded by what felt like all of Chicago joyfully protesting, was the first time I felt it. We WILL win. I say this not to minimize the work ahead. Today was a beginning, not an end, but I am re-energized for the fight ahead.
LANDLORDS not maintaining property they rent out, that's another story. Put them in prison, take their stuff.
