Since SNAP benefits are gone next month and the new ACA enrollment hikes also start to reveal themselves to consumers... it's wild to think that both programs are tilted towards states AND demographics that favored Trump in '24

Food insecurity is ALWAYS a political choice. Famine is ALWAYS manmade. People go hungry because of other people’s decisions. We have more than enough food for everyone, and enormous amounts of it are wasted—literally thrown in the garbage—on purpose.

”SNAP.” The program is called SNAP, and has been called SNAP since 2008.

“Food stamps” is significantly less popular than “SNAP”

Food banks are a great example here. Any money you give them is going to go a lot further than it will with you buying items and donating them on your own, because they can buy in bulk with pooled donations

as we reach the SNAP cliff just a gentle reminder to do-gooders that the most efficient use of resources is to contribute to organizations that are already established. unless nothing exists in your area (and it likely does whether you know it) now is probably not the time to stand something up

Not only is it going to be a hunger crisis, it's going to be a farm crisis. All those gallons of milk bought from dairy farmers, all the produce, all the on sale ground beef and packs of chicken that are paid for by SNAP are subsidies to farmers who don't qualify for commodities subsidies.

NOAA hurricane hunters flying aboard a P-3 Orion aircraft ("Kermit") are monitoring Hurricane Melissa as most aircraft steer clear. The storm poses a catastrophic threat to Jamaica and Haiti.

The crew are among the many federal workers working without pay during the US government shutdown.

A map image from the Flight Radar 24 service shows the flight track of a NOAA P-3 Orion aircraft flying over the Caribbean Sea, where Hurricane Melissa threatens to bring catastrophic rain and flooding to Jamaica and Haiti. Most other aircraft appear to be steering clear of the area.

And yes, giving food in your pantry is fine but cash helps food banks operate much more efficiently. And volunteer to box/bag/serve if you can.

this is something that individual members of Congress could do tomorrow. The government is shut down so they could use their district offices. I suggested in January that they turn those offices into full on community centers where people could find each other re: mutual aid etc...

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

My favorite Thurman Thomas goes back to 1992. He was somehow a featured speaker at Daemen where my gf at the time was enrolled. I asked for an autograph, had a rookie card and everything, he basically told me to fuck off. My gf, a lovely thin blond girl said to me “I bet I can.” And yeah, no problem

In addition to money donations to food banks & food aid for people, please also consider donating money or food & litter to pet food pantries. Many people who rely on SNAP to feed themselves will now need to redirect $ to buy groceries that they would have spent on pet food before.
