Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

My high school geometry teacher started the first day with women have trouble thinking in 3d.

Thankfully by the point I had him I knew how much that was bullshit.
the people who spread the “female brains are bad at math and spatial reasoning” lies should be tried at the Hague
Another fun wrinkle from that period (that might still exist): I was good at math and loved it and then my geometry teacher told me that I'd probably struggle because female brains were bad at spatial thinking. I kept loving math & being good at it but assumed that would end so I ended it first.

I have three signatures.
Full name
F Last
Initials

All are fairly distinctive, but i work in an industry that a wet signed document was (and to a point is) a requirement.

Changing my last name after marriage required thought and practice
Yep. When I had to sign several thousand tip-in pages for the special edition of HUNT THE STARS, I switched my official signing signature to just my initials and I haven’t looked back. J and M flow together nicely, even in my terrible handwriting. :)
If you sign a lot of anything - books, posters, photos, cards, etc - you usually develop a specific signature for those signings that is distinctive enough to be recognized as yours and also something you can consistently knock out in a couple of seconds without destroying your wrist/arm doing it.

Fascinating research on how often and for what reasons female economists are interrupted while presenting their work. Obviously this has applications outside economics. Nice to see actual hard data backing this up, instead of being gaslit about how it's all in our minds.
Here’s what they found:

Women are interrupted more often than men—by about 10–20% in economics seminars.

Those interruptions are more likely to:
- Cut women off mid-sentence
- Come from men
- Be adversarial rather than clarifying in nature

“Did they grow up under a rock??”

Yes. And the rock was probably put there on purpose by men who wanted uneducated people to control.

This is why we don’t leave any state or county or town behind. Nobody deserves to grow up under a rock. Especially one they would never have the power to move.

Also me justifying yet another ebook purchase before my next flight.
Look, I'm going to tell you a secret. If you buy an e-book while it's on sale, you never have to read it. If you have $2 to spare & want to help that particular author, you can just chuck the book into the oubliette of your TBR. Every sale helps. The author will never know, but you gave them a gift.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

For those looking for alternatives... I like my GIR ones
Only a very specific baking audience is going to care about this but apparently the company that makes Silpat has abruptly shut down. I’m personally buying up ones I can find from secondary retailers cause these things are irreplaceable. I’m bummed.

You may be amused to learn that there is an actual, official (though seldom used) name for the quantity "1/4 of a teaspoon". It's name? The "saltspoon". (The abbreviation for saltspoon is "ssp")

So there IS a measure for 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and it's the saltspoon.

All raisins are good but golden ones are the best. Especially with tea!
Golden raisins are the best raisins.

They have found a new oldest piece of fabric in Scotland. It’s looking like the textile tradition goes back a lot further than we thought. I am not surprised a bit, but knowing that archaeologists are finally looking for and keeping track of textiles in digs makes me very happy.

truly LEARNING is breaking things down into their parts and knowing how they fit together and then you can see what parts can fit together with other things in new ways.

I am terrified people are not learning how to synthesize information anymore! or just don't want to???
