I was heckled by another MP while asking about inclusive relationship education in schools

Sickened but not really surprised that homophobia is alive and well on the bench behind me

'They're primary school kids' he says - as if no primary school kids have lesbian or gay parents!

Smallbones died in 1976. He seems never to have talked about what he did. I suspect like others he felt guilt at not saving more.

The British Government acknowledged the existence of the Smallbones Scheme in 2008.

He was posthumously awarded the medal of a British Hero of the Holocaust in 2013 /22

For 9 months he worked 18hr days signing visas and arguing with the Gestapo.

"After two hours sleep my conscience pricked me. The feeling was horrible that there were people in concentration camp whom I could get out and that I was comfortable in bed. I returned to my desk and stayed there" /15

Smallbones then turned the entire Frankfurt British Consulate into a machine with one job: getting Jews out of Germany to safety in Britain. But the bottleneck remained:

The Consul (Smallbones himself) had to sign EVERYTHING, and often the Gestapo would only release people if he went personally /14

Smallbones then informed the Gestapo that if he approved a visa, that immediately placed that Jewish person under the protection of the British and he expected them to be IMMEDIATELY released when he asked.

It was a lie, and a gamble. But it worked. The Gestapo fumed about it, but complied. /13

This is how it should be for trans people coming out. Everyone knows it. None of us are doing anyone any harm, just dealing with a life event. It should be no more dramatic than getting married or having kids.

And it is like that, when you're not on Terf Island, as it turns out.

Imagine.
I’m a British trans woman but I live in Switzerland. I work for a Swiss-German multinational company as a senior leader. My coming out was entirely friction-free, and I was treated with respect and admiration by everyone with whom I interact (several hundred people).

Fascinating thread: I had not heard about Robert Smallbones before, whose effort was not acknowledged in his lifetime
The US granted visas to Jews but only allowed 30,000 in from Germany a year. You had to wait for your number to come up.

Meet Robert Smallbones. An unassuming British diplomat who 'hacked' this system so effectively (saving 48 THOUSAND Jews) the UK government kept his scheme secret for decades /1 🧵

I've read this thread from @garius.bsky.social before, but it's worth reading again. An excellent reminder that sometimes heroism is just a matter of determinedly doing what you can.

This thread? This thread is beautiful. It shows that a person who is just an ordinary, imperfect person can choose to do right, even though they are imperfect and have not always chosen right before, and it can have a massive impact.

If you see injustice? Choose to do right.
