I’m old enough to remember when there was just one Bicycle Thief.

I always laugh at how the victims in those old Universal monster movies never fight back or run away. Imhotep’s ancient corpse lumbers toward them at turtle speed & they just stand there screaming, as if they didn’t have every opportunity to escape or grab an effing candlestick and swing that bitch.

Don’t know if we got that one in the US. Doesn’t look familiar.

My ★★★★ review of Once Upon a Time in America boxd.it/bmBpiz

Undeniable masterpiece? Not for me. But definitely gorgeous, but occasionally problematic, must-see.

Leisurely pace creates almost dreamlike epic over 3 time frames of shifting power dynamics. Ambitious scope, well executed.

I don’t think hangings were as common as the movies make them out to be.

Haven’t seen any mention yet of Diane Keaton’s fascinating documentary “Heaven”. I recommend it.

“Memories are simply moments that refuse to be ordinary”
- Diane Keaton

Thank you for all of the extraordinary moments.

The angels are singing la-di-da, la-di-da in heaven tonight. RIP to a true original.
A still from Annie Hall showing Diane Keaton in the look that made her a fashion icon: baggy pants, vest and tie, and a black fedora.

David Lynch being in the #Emmys in memoriam broke something in me. He embodies so much of the medium’s potential that it’s almost impossible to think about him in the past tense.

#NowWatching ON THE WATERFRONT (1954). Director: Elia Kazan. Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint.

Masterpiece in own right, but legacy & storyline are complicated by Kazan's cooperation with HUAC in real life. Fascinating parallels. Winner of 8 Oscars, inc. picture.

Manet is better than Monet and mayonnaise is better than Miracle Whip.
Édouard Manet’s Olympia, a scathing parody of classicism, features a prostitute reclining on a bench while a black slave and an apparently horny black cat attend her. The painting mimics Titian’s Venus of Urbino and was seen as a vulgar corruption of Salon ideals. Now, many regard it as one of the great paintings of all time.

Saw this as a teenager growing up in an all-white world. The music and historical ties drew me in, but the Coalhouse Walker plot rewired my brain forever

And the musicals those filmmakers did make, like Scorsese’s New York, New York and Fosse’s Cabaret and All That Jazz were very dark.
