It's incredible the extent to which Congress just utterly refuses to defend itself. You'd think for entirely self-interested reasons you would stridently oppose having the power of the purse arbitrarily ripped from you, ya know?

Why would you allow yourself to become the Roman Senate circa 27 BC.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

I’m curious. If you’re a PhD grad, are you ever in contact with your old department or advisors? And did you stay in academia, or get a different job?
noiserockdad.bsky.social
*Trying* to get another job, 3 years of searching now (I'm back in school for accounting). I've tried to leave academia as far behind as I can. There's nothing there for me, and my experience was mixed.

The structure of this lede is quite instructive. Use action words ("slams") and extensive quotes to amplify Johnson's heinous lie, then, rather than plainly stating that this is complete bs, the reporters avers that his statement "drew condemnation from some Democrats."
Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday slammed the No Kings protest march scheduled to take place at the National Mall next week, describing the planned protest as the “hate America rally” that would draw “the pro-Hamas wing” and “the antifa people.” His characterizations, however, drew condemnation from some Democrats who defended the protest movement, whose first big demonstration was overwhelmingly peaceful.

apnews.com/article/trum... OMB says the money for the troops is going to be covered by R&D but we’re back at how does DFAS color that money (like legally how does it use that pot) and distribute it properly over a holiday weekend to meet a Wednesday suspense.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

What drives me nuts about this dialogue: diversity and inclusion training was a corporate response to the statutory requirements civil rights laws. None of these laws have been repealed by Congress. Congress can pass the laws under Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, which has also not been repealed.

lol gentle reminder that DEI is not illegal. Supporting marginalized groups is not illegal. Anyone reneging on support is making a CHOICE to do so.

IRS layoffs are costly for the U.S., redistributing wealth to the top 1% (who lie on their taxes at jaw-dropping rates).

The bottom 99% generally pay their taxes. cepr.org/voxeu/column...
Taxes evaded as a percent of taxes owed from a study showing that the 99th wealth percentile and above evade significantly more taxes than everyone else. The richest evade 25% of the taxes they owe on average. The bottom 95% evade less than 3% of their taxes on average. While these data are from Scandinavia, similar patterns are likely in other countries, including the U.S.

An engraved eagle from a recruit poster for the Union army aimed at Philadelphia area German speakers. The eagle flies downward witha radiant pattern behind him, as well as an American flag on a pole topped with a Phrygian cap. In its mouth, a German language inscription in Fraktur font, translated as "Union and Freedom forever! 👉 Death to the Traitors!"

If you don’t delete an AI video after multiple people have pointed out to you that it is, honestly, fuck you. You are spreading misinformation at best, and at worst, contributing to the deterioration of our shared reality.

“Asset managers and financial advisers have concocted a zillion ways to disguise their fees. Congress wants to give them yet another.
A bill passed by the House and pending in the Senate would authorize portfolios often used in retirement accounts to skip reporting the expenses of certain funds”
Congress Thinks Hiding Fund Fees Is Good for You
Even if fund expenses seem to disappear, they’re still the biggest drag on your returns.

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.
