Yeah, we are at the precipice of barbarism. One party believes that good governance is masked men with guns flooding our streets and terrorizing any person the state considers a threat while demolishing the state as we know it and selling off pieces of its carcass to oligarchs and regional barons.
it's hard to get your mind around how irredeemably broken this country has become. no one in charge at this time seems to understand even the basics of our system of government as written or our stated set of values as a secular society
Pirro: "These Guardsmen and all who are here to protect the District are the line that separates a civilized society from a barbaric one."

So funny how Republicans really believe Jews are breaking Right because they personally know like three Modern Orthodoxers and keep pumping College Panic articles, but then you look at actual data and... nope. We still lib as fuck.

Genuinely horrific to see influential Jewish groups in America openly saying that their TOP TWO priorities in the year 2025 is to facilitate the fascist take over of social media and to weaken teacher's unions.

this is because people want to turn their cities into museums of their own past. they don't want the future. they want to turn into dust reflecting on how awesome they used to be
It’s really incredible how we decided that cities should no longer be physically shaped by the industries that carry them. I wrote this about the tech industry’s lack of a built legacy in Manhattan over a decade ago, but it could be written 10x over in the Bay Area newyorkyimby.com/2014/12/how-...

With strict limits on growth in Midtown South and on the Brooklyn waterfront, tech giants are leaving little architecture behind for future generations.

Like, this is a regime entirely built out of conspiracy theories, did we think that building and normalizing a conspiracy theory that countries invading each other for oil is just a normal thing that happens wasn’t gonna lead to some particularly monstrous idiots going “guess it is haha hell yeah”

Okay so we are aware that those allegations exist almost entirely because a spectrum-wide alliance of populist grifters needed a post hoc way to absolve The People of supporting the Iraq War for racist panic reasons and the right realized it was more socially acceptable than the alternative, right

Ultimately, I'd still rather Brandon Sanderson stop paying tithes to the LDS, BUT reading his essay where he said "If I'm gonna believe in hell, why wouldn't I choose to believe in the version where people can still be saved after death?" DID increase my respect for liberal Mormons at least a little
And a small shout out to c) the Mormon position of "yeah, you can baptize people posthumously and save them from hell." Which admittably causes a fuckton of problems, but those problems are WAY WAY WAY better than the ones entailed by alternative afterlife theologies.

One of my favorite IO insights is that, at the highest levels, advertising isn't about maximizing outreach (who *doesn't* know what Coke is?); it's about inflating the cost-to-compete for potential rivals, keeping them out of the market

Campaigning is JUST marketing; making this problem even worse
Politicians are sellers trying to get you to sell your vote to them. The way they do so is by maximizing outreach. When the number of people they need to reach out to is in the tens of thousands (at least!) and there is no remaining accessible public forum, that creates a natural barrier-to-entry.

RCV is good. But it takes an economic analysis to get why the two party system exists and why RCV ain't enough.

We have an oligopoly of the Red and Blue Parties for largely the same reasons we have an oligopoly of the Red and Blue Soda Companies.

Political parties benefit from economies of scale.
Ranked-choice voting didn't *mathematically* change much in Portland, mostly the same people won who would have with FTTP. But it sure did lower the level of rancor a bunch, letting voters have more "expressive power" without worrying about spoilers
i am...skeptical about implementation here state-by-state but it could absolutely strengthen coalition unity and decrease alienation of the primary electorate.

This is something I’ve said before, but propaganda is extremely corrosive because eventually your own elites buy into it as well, with disastrous consequences.

Mitch McConnell of course had no foresight and only chose to chase short term gains. Now his myopic approach ruined his beloved party.
Mitch genuinely thought Republicans could go on forever maintaining kayfabe re:the debt limit. He thought Republican senators would always be ~in~ on the strategy.

He did not account for the idea that future Republican electeds would ACTUALLY listen to Republican media and rhetoric.

The sad thing is that if you did this with the linguistic subfields of syntax and semantics, you would genuinely get more empirically reliable theoretical research, with fewer hallucinations, than what we've got so far in the literature.
Ok so.

"The Genesis Mission will build an integrated AI platform to harness Federal scientific datasets — the world’s largest collection ... — to train scientific foundation models and create AI agents to test new hypotheses, automate research workflows, and accelerate scientific breakthroughs."
"the president has directed the Department of Energy to launch an AI project called the genesis mission" sounds like something out of a technothriller

2000s Republicans were incubated in the elite info-environment of finance, who created a parallel media to rhetorically rationalize [lit. lie about] Republican policy and energize low-info reactionaries.

2020s Republicans were incubated in *that* environment their predecessors built for them.
2000s Republicans believed that Iraq was actually about [insert neocon apologetics], and that "we went to war for oil" is just something uninformed know-nothing liberal media celebs parrot.

2020s Republicans believe we went to war in Iraq for oil and racism and that that was good actually.
