"as few as 2,000 automated vehicles could slow downtown San Francisco traffic to under two miles per hour – not through malice, but through the simple economic logic of avoiding parking fees by circling slowly"

Two mph is probably too slow, but this sounds like a powerful tool for slower speeds
Seems bad:

"Our current roadspace regime—free driving lanes here, metered parking there—is a patchwork that autonomous vehicles will arbitrage relentlessly."

They made Mamdani into a communist jihadist for being a Muslim democratic socialist. He could NEVER get away with something like that.
somehow I get the feeling that if Mamdani had a nazi tattoo we'd have simply never heard of him again about 15 min after it was revealed instead of having to read a new piece every 5 days about how he's just a smol bean

the police union should pay that $29 million, not the city of Seattle. Maybe then *our* law enforcement will respect other lives. /rage

The article is somehow even worse. The officer who killed her had previously driven recklessly and the officer who laughed sued for wrongful termination. You can't fix this. Get rid of it all and replace them with social workers.

Land of the coward home of the slave where it takes 2 years of permits to open a low intensity small business and you have to rent out a small supply of commercial buildings far away from residences to do it.
After housing, this is the next big zoning reform: the right to do business. Always found it odd that the USA, supposedly the land of the free market, makes it the hard if not outright illegal to open a business in most places.

Like many other planning failures, this one's also rooted in racism.
The al pastor taco truck at sleepy North Berkeley BART is booming every night with neighbors, cyclists and families. Imagine what we could do with fully legalized street vending citywide.

The funny thing about residential zoning though is, put that business in a car and suddenly it's OK!

Services that go to someone's house, gig work food delivery and ride apps, etc are all businesses operating in residential zones, but since they're on wheels, it gets around local zoning.

I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.
