Signs of the times in Chicago today: My daughter's school went on soft lockdown because of reports of ICE. Volunteers showed up at the nearby H.S. to escort people who didn't feel safe. Walking around, I saw lots of orange whistles around people's necks.

It’s amusing that if he eats his last Big Mac tonight, lots of folks still assume his employees - who are in a constant contest to outdo each other in violating every law, right, and norm - will punctiliously follow the line of succession rather than devolve into rival fiefdoms.

We could have replaced actual football games with AI players on a simulated field a LONG time ago - we could have pulled this off by simply televising people playing Madden even before that.

Analogy: Imagine a robot could play really good golf. Would you watch? Maybe as a curiosity. Would you want it competing against humans? Ofc not. Now imagine the robot played good golf sometimes but sometimes threw all its clubs off a cliff. That’s gen AI doing art. Misses the point & also sucks.

Our failure to intervene in Syria in 2011-2013 lit the long fuse that led to right-wing authoritarianism in the US and Europe.

Or maybe it was Afghanistan, if our involvement there prevented us from acting in Syria.

It was in fact handed to him for nothing. I’m sorry, folks need to stop pretending it was anything but an anti-Bush statement that served to delegitimize the award.

That said, adults move on and don’t demand the Nobel committee make subsequent unmeritorious awards.
