one piece of the driverless car puzzle no one has solved is how anyone can feel a sense of peace or justice when a robot kills a person or animal they love, and it’s a problem both for moral reasons and for boosters who don’t want the tech to get banned as part of an emotional response
it’s wild how the instant you criticize waymo people come out of the woodwork to pretend we’re all throwing parties when humans kill people in cars and also to post sociopathic shit like “it’s the dog owners fault”
It’s wild how people will instantly rally against Waymo but we never see the same level of invective when human drivers kill people.

“It was an accident.”

1. Keep your pets leashed.
2. If local politicians treated human drivers killing people like this we would already have much safer streets.

Question: if Sufjan Stevens did an album about your state, what would there be songs about? (sorry, Michigan and Illinois, you have to sit this one out.)

Here’s Texas:
1. Jack Ruby’s Lament
2. Elizabeth Taylor in Marfa
3. Big Tex
4. That Playboy Bob Wills
5. Grackles & French Fries
6. Big Bend

I'll go first for Maryland:

2. Harriet Tubman

4. The pursuit of John Wilkes Booth
5. The Chesapeake
6. Crabs

one thing I like about SLOW HORSES is that it's always - always - MI5's fault because they do crap like this and then it bites them in the ass
TIL that the guy who allegedly shot the two National Guard troops was a child soldier for the CIA. I feel like that should shock more people.

Some truly awesome humans (and some of the best writers I've had the privilege of calling friends) have started an Indie Press. Can't wait to see what they come up with.
Great news, everyone! Hook & Quill Press is launching today as an indie publishing company, supporting and supported by the writing community (and one octopus). We have plenty of exciting announcements for your feed today, but here's a quick teaser...

Very happy to be included here with my piece, If the Concrete. My story is partly based on a news item about a young woman giving birth in prison.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest. Six myths: 1) She wasn't old or tired. 42 years old that day, she had a "life history of being rebellious" & had spent two decades helping to turn the Montgomery NAACP into a more activist branch alongside ED Nixon and Johnnie Carr.

Dear Walmart, I have just been informed that your grinch is Walton Goggins.

There is only one rule with Goggins, and you broke it.

If you’re going to Goggins, you have to go all the way. There’s no such thing as a half-Goggins.

I’m not angry. I’m just disappointed.
