I'm 22 minutes early for a job interview, so yes, of course I'm sitting in my parked car listening to "Every1's a Winner" by Hot Chocolate on repeat.

I was never on any dating apps, and I'm very glad to have missed them, but every time I see something like this I imagine how normal I would try to make my profile. I would work hard to make myself seem level-headed and easygoing, and I would somehow come across as the most deranged psycho on earth.
I would complain more about my experience on the apps but this is what my roommate deals with

This is very good. I like to remind people that headlines in the 80s would (regularly!) talk about people who drank lattes or ate sushi as exotic, self-indulgent yuppies with obscure tastes. Media constantly made fun of “haute cuisine” meals with tiny portions because fine dining was bad.
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

When a publication like the New Yorker says "we", that doesn't include you or me or anybody else we know. It's what I've chosen to call Remnick Voice. He is speaking to and for his peers, as well as the people who tell him to jump and how high.

Not all troops engage in atrocities but this kill anything/everybody mindset is endemic to the American way of war -- and has been since before the dawn of the Republic. I chronicled it re: Vietnam War. Others have done so in terms of other conflicts and contexts
