Just watched the finale of Australian Portrait Artist of the Year and a bit shocked to realise it was filmed in 2022. Did the ABC have that little faith in it that they sat on it for 3 years? I greatly enjoyed it.

one insidious thing about gen AI is it's not just causing us to mistrust dodgy images, it's also making us mistrust images that look perfectly normal. this is gaslighting in a very literal sense bc the technology is undermining the trust we have in our own ability to perceive reality!

JK Rowling got a full *decade* of press as a martyr for being "cancelled" (declared passe by people online) and meanwhile nobody considers it very interesting that a prominent left wing author is basically banned from entering or publishing in the United Kingdom for her politics

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.

The thing is, you can find horses just about any place. Wild horses, even. You can find snow gums, corroboree frogs and pygmy possums pretty much only in one place. So, to me, it makes sense to do our best to protect these unique species and landscapes, even if that comes at a cost.

There's a weird collective self-justification among reporters on this beat that their job is not to push back but to be stoic in order to observe an endlessly fascinating natural phenomenon. It's all nonsense. He is a public servant. Demand decency, and slap back hard and fast when you don't get it.
