Today, Eamon Coburn argues that the recent “no tax on overtime” provision, by encouraging people to spend more time on the job, runs directly counter to the original purpose of overtime laws: to protect workers’ personal time and give them greater control over their lives.
What is the Point of Overtime Laws?
When Congress eliminated taxes on overtime last summer, it framed the move as a win for workers. However, by encouraging people to spend more time on the job, the policy runs directly counter to the…

As we think about the safety net we might need to deal with job displacement risk, UI reform will be super important.

@alixgouldwerth.bsky.social and I have a new piece about our research on one perverse aspect of the UI system: its reliance on employer taxes that rise with benefit claims. 1/

Did you know that your former employers can contest your unemployment benefits? They have a strong incentive to do so, and private companies like Equifax are helping them. 🧵

Great piece on the rationale for maximum hours laws in light of the “no tax on overtime” messaging in @lpeblog.bsky.social by Eamon Coburn : lpeproject.org/blog/what-is... .

Time to reclaim “8 (or 10 or 12) hours for what we will” as a principle in bargaining and lawmaking.

After the third deceased equine case in a single string cite, this footnote is really beating a dead horse.

@erikloomis.bsky.social 's discussion of Loewe v. Lawlor is a great example of this point, but it is difficult to overstate how much "judges hate unions" can explain a huge number of otherwise doctrinally-unbound labor law cases.
And the fact that this was unanimous, I mean, it’s worth thinking for a minute of how much the American legal and political system were rigged against organized labor at this time.

We need to agree on abbreviations for the 2021 "Build Back Better Act" and the 2025 "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" because I just saw the latter referred to as BBB, which seems unnecessarily confusing. "BBB" and "OBBB" seem right?

Thank you for your attention to this matter!
