LOOK AT THOSE DEAD EYES when Pollitt was “out of stage costume”! if that’s not an historical trans woman, i don’t know who is
a figure from page 38 of the revised edition of “Perdurabo”, depicting Herbert Pollitt in “costume” as a “female impersonator” looking fucking unclockable, next to Pollitt “out of stage costume”, with the deadest eyes you’ve ever seen unless you have known an egg or two in your life before they transitioned

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
mattcameron.bsky.social
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
"Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians not directly taking part in hostilities, even if they are believed to be smuggling drugs."

In an old ad for board game Scattergories in Spain a player was shown flouncing out while anothet said “OK, we’ll accept ‘octopus’ as a pet”.
“Aceptamos pulpo” has now entered the language in the meaning of “that’s a bit of a stretch but let’s go with it just for the sake of argument”.

Medical institutions treat trans people as a population to surveil, manage, and dissect, rather than as people to assist or treat with basic dignity.

Oslo University Hospital caught using trans patients' journals for research purposes:
- Without the patients' consent to participate in research
- Affecting minors
- 1700 of them
- Taking highly sensitive information from said journals

This is a HUGE breach.

Tidligere i år meldte vi et forskningsprosjekt til redelighetsutvalget ved OUS og UiO.

Nå er forskerne felt for alvorlige brudd på forskningsetiske normer.

I think he's in some ways quite similar to Dickens, fundamentally a humanistic believer in liberalism but deeply suspicious of any political philosophy or ideology

I don't think this is the only explanation. My own reading has fallen off massively, and it's not because I'm working more - it very much feels like an attention economy problem. I struggle to pull myself away from the various easy-gratification machines

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

"there are no atheists in foxholes" is a terrible expression. sure, the things that foxes worship do not resemble our "gods". that does not mean that they are atheists

Taylor Swift announces next album title: The Queen in Yellow. She told Variety: "A few years back I came across this amazing play and I was so inspired. It's been living in my head for years. I even dream of it, of the city in the play."

the whole robophobia meme immediately stopped funny once half the jokes became equating clanker with the n word. like, no it's not identical, but if you're replacing a word in a racial slur you can't reclaim with "wire", i'm gonna look at you funny! i don't think you should be staying that!!!
