Adding onto this, I've always felt like a big part of why the "cultural impact" conversation happened at all was only because it seemingly sidelined the career of popular, celebrated director for over a decade on the dangling promise of sequels
My take on the "AVATAR hasn't made a big cultural impact" thing is that for movies in the last 40 years to make a big cultural impact, people need to watch them over and over and over, and among popular films, AVATAR is uniquely bad at being a movie that people want to watch on their TV.

I haven't stopped thinking about Metal Garden all year. Perfect atmosphere and some incredibly clever level design. If you love early 2000s, Half-Life-era shooters and you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor

The confusion and conflation of ‘generative ai that is built on stolen artwork’ and ‘machine learning, character behaviour modelling and proc gen’ is intentional on the part of the grifters peddling the former. They benefit from murkiness of classification, because the latter predates their bollocks

I was told by an ex Lucasarts designer I worked with at Telltale that Dash Rendar, the main character of Shadows of the Empire, got his name from the command the engineers used to update the scene:

-render
i was going through my X archives and found this by @superpodsaga.com, which I qrt'd at some point years ago

so, let me bring the question back: what is the most useless piece of video game knowledge you know?

Shadow Labyrinth is in the same timeline as Ace Combat 3

Apparently, somehow the events of Ace Combat 3 will lead to the dark sci-fi Pac-Man Metroidvania over a thousand years later. This is a real official thing

What am I supposed to do with this

hell fucking yes one of the best in the history of "not actually that good" games. sure it's kind of a mess. it's also a mess where i can keep jump kicking mall cops into the wall 30 feet away as jada pinkett smith in a red leather jacket. like i can do just that for an hour

There's an "Into Sandy's Shitty" joke somewhere in there but honestly it's not worth the effort. Fuck that guy
“Literally funded by EU tax dollars”.

No "dollars" involved, and the EU pre-production arts grant was under 5% of Dustborn’s total budget.

Watching an "industry professional" (ex-iD, Chaosium, Microprose) recycle culture-war rage bait is pretty bleak. This is how disinformation spreads.

Not gonna bother linking the Escapist article that seems to have kicked this off, but it is *impressively* bad

Not only does the author not site a single source for this claim, they don't even seem to understand the difference between Generative AI and basic Enemy Behavior AI
There is no AI used in Blue Prince. The game was built and crafted with full human instinct by Tonda Ros and his team at
@dogubomb.bsky.social.

It is the result of eight years of development, fuelled by imagination and creativity, and we are extremely proud of what Tonda has achieved.

Tried to fill out the GOTY list on Backloggd but honestly I don't feel like I can adequately compress all the cool stuff I played this year down to just six entries. No matter what I put down other worthy stuff gets left out

Really can't overstate how much I love the visual and audio design in Routine. Just stunning sense of place and presence
As penance for doomposting here's the biggest scare in Routine for me thus far

For those that don't know - only one scary robot in the level can be active at once, so you often encounter robots just Blair Witchin' it/staring off into space... until they activate.

Long-awaited, impossibly stunning horror games that actually came out and more than live up to the anticipation

America has deindustrialized so much they can't even manufacture consent
I still can't believe they're trying to make a war happen out of thin air. Not just their abrogation of Congress's role in formally declaring a war -- that's been a slippery slope for decades -- but their total unwillingness even to go through the motions of drumming up public support.

I fucking loathe these smug ass art-hating self-congratulating ghouls & the system that allows them to fail upwards into unfathomable wealth on the backs of 1000s of overworked creative people whose livelihoods get passed around like trading cards every time these dillwads have a stonks circle-jerk.

Witchfire is one of the best guns-and-superpowers shooters out there and I'm not gonna stop singing its praises until everyone knows it
Ooh, big update for Witchfire adding melee weapons today.

This game is what happens when a bunch of Destiny super-fans decide to make something that *isn't* a live-service Forever Game. Very similar feeling combat but with almost all the fat cut out.

Single-player only, BTW. No multiplayer plans.

So ready for Ontos. Frictional diving back into trippy sci-fi horror is enough to have me sat day one. But bringing in Stellan Skarsgard on top of that is unfairly cool

Valve HQ:

"AAA game about murdering a lot of Muslims and destroying their homes" "ship it"
"solo game in which you fight the IDF" "ban the savages"
"indie game that criticizes Western power dynamics with a horse metaphor" "unacceptable"
"This review hates Muslims" "ahh smell that thats freedom"
Valve has now rejected my complaint, confirming that "I don't like muslims" is a valid reason to leave a negative review on a game on Steam

This is where we're at now.
