So the lesson we ought to take away from this is that any system built on the assumption that billionaires will not reveal themselves to be moral cretins is destined to eventually fail.

DEMOCRATS: reform ICE?
E: abolish ICE
D: so we should keep ICE
E: abolish ICE
D: ah, keep ICE the same way that it is now
E: abolish ICE

E: abolish ICE
D: and give them a bigger budget
E: abolish ICE
D: see, we do listen to the people

I've told this story on ContrabandCamp but it's worth sharing for BHM because it's one of the greatest stories ever.

A thread.

I'm not saying ONE SPEECH is SOLELY responsible for 3 HBCUs, an anti-racist town, defeating a federal detention policy or creating one of our greatest poets

All I'm saying is:

If all this happened literally the FIRST TIME white people listened to Black people...

Maybe we should try it again

Here's my commonsense reform for ICE, Chuck:

1) Abolish the agency
2) Prosecute all agents & leadership to the fullest extent possible (incl. Noem & Miller)
3) Bar all former agents from any federal jobs going forward, whether it's a law enforcement position or otherwise

No, we want it burned to the ground. You can't "reform" a paramilitary secret murder squad, you can only remove it and everyone involved with it.

When we say "abolish ICE", we mean what we say. Christ, why can't you understand the situation we're in?!
Democrats want commonsense reform for ICE:

End the roving patrols and racial profiling.

Take accountability and abide by the same rules as local police.

Masks need to come off, body cameras need to stay on—no secret police in the United States of America.

/3 I think the Harper’s Letter people should be encouraged to come together as a community, gather at a convention, and spend several days together with each other, but then I am notoriously cruel.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI are rushing to dump their sorry carcasses onto the public markets, and ”training” is going to be something they frame as a different kind of expense. In reality, training is as necessary a fuel for OpenAI or Anthropic as gasoline is for a car.

Thread.
I was extremely naive in my twenties and early thirties, took people very much at their word when it came to values, and absolutely destroyed my mental health (and my career) thinking I could publicly demand accountability and survive it whole.

(1/?)
the Epstein files make it very clear why the MeToo backlash was so extreme and why so much of elite society preferred Donald Trump ruling us like a king to the barest hint of accountability

With apologies to the late George Carlin: maybe if we still officially called it "police brutality" instead of "officer misconduct" it wouldn't be so difficult.

"Officer misconduct" makes it sound like they were chewing gum in class or smoking in the boys' room.
Handwritten pro se effort wins Arizona man a big police brutality settlement. "While his case has had a remarkable outcome, it also shows the difficulties faced by ordinary Americans who are victims of officer misconduct." [Matt Cavedon, @cato.org]

The President shit himself on live TV. Melania bombed. The Epstein files are sending shockwaves through the Alt Right. Liam and his dad are back home. A Texas district that was DEEP red for 35 years flipped blue. Pretti's killers have been identified.

Small wins, but you can feel the change coming.

A reminder that the Kennedy Center is the literal and legal and congressional designated presidential memorial to JFK. This would be like Trump tearing down the Lincoln Memorial to build something “better.”
He’s going to tear it down

Which I think is further evidence that this account/effort is not Kaufmanesque satire but in fact a very lazy astroturf test balloon
I would almost say, "I can't get even get mad, it's such a funny bit."

The problem is, we all know where this goes, and the answer is, "(((they))) did it"
