Just FYI in case anyone's interested, when you put a bunch of emojis after your screen name it makes it unnecessarily challenging for people who use screen readers to read your posts and follow you. The screen reader will read out every single emoji description every time you pop up in their feed.

Even if age verification laws require data deletion, you have to trust every website and third-party verifier will actually do it. That's a lot of faith to place in companies with spotty track records—and a risk that doesn't exist when a bartender just glances at your ID. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
Why Isn’t Online Age Verification Just Like Showing Your ID In Person?
This blog also appears in our Age Verification Resource Hub: our one-stop shop for users seeking to understand what age-gating laws actually do, what’s at stake, how to protect yourself, and why EFF

Just learned from our younger child what the current version of “first world problems” is.

There's such a weird series of nested conflations going on here.

Like, it seems that Alice wants to use AI to do art... so that she can post it on the internet for clout and praise, and Bob's advice is bad because beginners don't get praise and clout, but get nasty comments for being beginners?

No you’re not lol

Every time I'm in a restaurant I remember Kevin McAleer's reply to a waiter who told him the Soup Of The Day.

"Where there any other contenders?"
"Um, no?"
"A hollow victory, then".

Funny animal videos no longer being trustworthy just fucking sucks all around. I love the wonder of animal behavior and what it says about the experience of being alive. It's because it happened in reality that it's so fun. It's not fun if it was just made up. There's no wonder there.

this is a very good article. genAI is being coerced onto artists by executives and bosses who don't understand what the artists' job actually entails. it's the dream of ignorant c suite ghouls and no one else.
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” stressed Canavan. “This is what concept artists were made for. Why would you pollute that glorious creative movement with joyless, photocopied art?”
Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists working in games about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier. Zero said it did.

the other day I looked at a line that was difficult to localize and went “oh I see what’s happening here. there’s a Shakespeare reference baked in that we don’t want to lose”. you don’t get that without filling your head with all of these creative pieces you squirrel away because of their meaning
YES! this is what techbros who have let their creative selves wither call "procrastination" or "inefficiency" and try to technologise away, not understanding that it is the source of creativity and imagination and everything good
When I sit down to write I'm not consciously pulling from my notes, I'm drawing on the 6 months I spent reading biographies, watching hours of interviews, etc. There is a volume of research, of effort & time that is required to create something meaningful to draw from.

I have a trans family member. They're one person but they have like 40 close relatives, not to mention however many friends and social media connections, and we all want the best for them. 1% of a population doesn't sound like much but anecdotally that's a lot of social connections.
Some Dems have told themselves only ~1% of the population is trans so they can dip their toe in the anti-trans filth and come out clean.

I don't have any trans family members—but it still makes me irate. I see it as a huge red flag, a sign you are unprincipled and untrustworthy. And I'm not alone.
We are parents of a trans kid and our family takes this very, very personally. If you intentionally make life harder for our beloved daughter, it’s EXTREMELY hard to think of you as an ally, to say the least. @amyklobuchar.com - you still send us requests for money, while hurting our kid. Disgusted.

I will never, ever, understand people who want to outsource their humanity. Learning how to make something feels amazing. And I mean the whole process, including the frustrating times. Because then you know you MADE it. You can't feel genuine pride in something you didn't make.

Again; if youre spending hours looking for and at research materials and come away no better off, youre bad at your job!

Authors, remember that you CAN insist on human translation for your foreign-language editions and have it written into your contracts. You can no longer just assume you're going to get a human to work on the book whose every word you wrote with intent.

great thread example about how gen AI can't even be trusted to do very simple and relatively unimportant things, which it fails at with total confidence until a human operator manually catches and corrects it, while it's increasingly being used by people to do complex and seriously important things
I watched a manager try to use Copilot to do a holiday raffle this week live. He gave it a list 100ish members and 50 prizes and said no repeats, and it proceeded to award the same 7 people all prizes.

The number of waffling, stonewalling prompts it took to get that done would get a human fired.

The Luddites smashed machinery (like textile frames) because that machinery was robbing them of their livelihoods, much like generative AI does. The rich machine owners blocked factory workers from getting legal protections and got richer while workers got poorer. Sound familiar?
