hey, so, I'm one of those folks who won't get their food stamps unless something really good happens really quickly in this country, so could y'all spare me a couple bucks?

they're my whole food budget & the historical food insecurity trauma is hitting extra hard during an already rough time for me
I'm queer, visibly trans, invisibly disabled, largely unable to work, trying to get by on less than $50\mo, & not succeeding, please help me

Hey, if you're feeling thankful for all the bounty in your life right now, it's not a bad idea to toss some coin to trans people who are struggling. (I boosted two folks that I know personally just now, but there are so many, many others on here.)

it's a drawing of a bunch of people sitting around a table covered in food with a caption that says "when you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher wall"
The era we are living in offers too many illustrations of greed, narcissism, and hatefulness. But I still believe we can recommit ourselves to serving the common good of all Americans. [Artwork by Jennifer Bloomer]

I don't see how Tesla's Model 3 can survive if Benz can offer an alternative EV this cheap, with this kind of performance, on top of the 15% tariff that it's charged in the US.

Imagine what this model does to Tesla in Europe, where Benz pays no tariffs.

hey, IDK who needs to hear this but if you sign up for Purina pet food rewards they semi regularly give away free (no points needed) physical coupons for dog and cat food and treats, sometimes 100% off

and if you don't happen to need those you can donate them to someone in need, a food pantry, etc

yes, it IS weird to have an illness where exercise is contraindicated
Isn't it so weird to deeply know in your bones something obvious with no equivocation, for years and years, and then to one day see articles about people wondering if maybe the incredibly obvious thing you've known this whole time might be happening, as if the media is discovering it now??

A very easy solution is to make a lovely punch. Put a bottle of rum on the side for people who want it alcoholic.

Same with eggnog.

I mean have other stuff too but a lot of classic holiday beverages are really easy to just do non-alcoholic as the default.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Holiday reminders:

- If someone has a new relationship, they’ll tell you. You don’t need to ask.
- If someone is pregnant and they want to share that, they’ll tell you. You don’t need to ask.
- If someone’s body has changed, they’re aware. You don’t need to point it out.

Tomorrow is a month away from Xmas Eve. Please have a look to see if you have any children's clothes, books, toys, etc that are no longer needed & donate them to your local charity shop ASAP. The demand for these items is now, not after Xmas. People are skint but still want to make Xmas special. ❤️

"the cost of transit is time"

THIS

I used to live an 18 minute drive or a 1 hour & 49 minute bus ride (when the stars aligned) from the college I went to

by the time I got there I was too tired for class, by the time I got home I had no time for homework

I ended up dropping out after 2 semesters
I am super-pro-public transit, and use it way more than the average American, but I live near a light rail station with very, very stable and predictable scheduling, and even then I would not use it for many things I use a car for because the cost of transit is time.
i wonder how much of Americans' views on driving vs. transit would change if they had to pay for gas/insurance/etc every time they turned on the engine

"i'm not paying $5 to take the train to work twice a day when i can just drive" is a genuine opinion held by so many people

It saves a tremendous amount of overhead (money) and time (money) and complications (people who are eligible dropping out because they can't prove they are), but mostly it forecloses an extremely common form of fiscal parental abuse.
Periodically I see people justifying means-testing to ensure The Rich don't get stuff for free when they can afford it.

I see the logic, but we can just tax them more.

Plus, the BIGGEST thing not means-testing solves is

*deep breath*

IT STOPS RICH PEOPLE FINANCIALLY-ABUSING THEIR KIDS ANYMORE.

It's not just "consumer smart" it reduces environmental waste, key materials are often mined in slave conditions. The whole tenor of the article is wrong - why is the economy so dependent on us engaging in mass waste?

HARD AGREE. There’s also such a big gap in how the impacts are conceptualized: there’s a belief that 4chan/incel forums direct their toxicity outward, while pro-ana forums are seen as directing theirs inward, which ignores the massive and ruthless trolling that pro-ana folks aim at fat people.
