Jfc. Okay. Adding that to the list. What's wild is that these are all like, tricks that serial killers use to lure victims. Regular Americans work constantly to fund a government that is training federal agents to follow the Ted Bundy playbook.

the thing is, if you earnestly believed they were gonna rig everything and manage to pull off a totalitarian takeover, you wouldn't be on this website, unless you're just a colossal idiot. you would be doing other things in preparation

you don't believe it. stop this mopey horseshit
strange to me that a lot of people on this website simultaneously agree that the administration is run by incompetents who struggle to carry out their agenda without major political blowback AND that they’ll pull off a complex and sophisticated effort to rig elections and prevent defeat in November

There's an irony that it used to be a very conservative thing to pray for a religious revival, but I think an actual Christian revival in the United States would probably be a forcefully liberal movement - much as abolitionism was.

On some level, as an adult convert to Catholicism, you are presumably required to believe that the Holy Spirit selects the Pope to communicate God's wisdom.

And then the Pope tells you you're an ass. And then God sends *another* Pope, a few weeks later, *to repeat the message.*

It's not subtle!

voting for President is not a moral endorsement of a candidate, it is a practical choice between two people, one of whom will be given immense power over the country for four years with very few guardrails. it is a civic duty to choose the candidate who will do the most good and least harm.

as a black comedy, someone should write a version of WWI leadup that has social media. Don't bother about incongruity of fitting 21st century social media tech into early 1900s. Just imagine what it would have been like

To underline the point that a lot of Americans have a cartoon understanding of dictatorships, consider that even Hitler had to worry about public opinion and in fact one of the key functions of the gestapo was assessing the mood of the country.

That is, if you think this has to stop and it can never happen again, the first step is draw the status quo's political defenders into the open.

In '26 you run on chasing the criminals. You make them fight you, nickel-and-dime them. Then in '28 you say, "We did our best, it's hopeless. Wipe it off the map and go back to the drawing board."

An immigration enforcement service is necessary, and there will always be support for it. Support for how it's currently conducted is bleeding fast. It is not the same as abolition. You effectively and politically accomplish abolition by starving the current service. Then you start again.

The new organization should have a name life PUFF and be given uniforms in bright or pastel colors. They don’t need to be in camo. And their guns should be the girliest pink imaginable with rhinestones-something a 13 year old cheerleader would design. That should drive out the cosplayers

Well, time for a MAGA boycott then

@bencollins.bsky.social, this—we're at a point where the Onion urgently (and incredibly!) needs to use whatever clout/recognition it has... to become a serious paper.
Because reality has outstripped parody.

many commercial jets have been blown out of the sky because they were believed to be covert military aircraft. Secretary Hegseth just gave every SAM site on the planet an excuse to take pot shots at any 737s they think are suspicious, and now we’re all less safe
perfidy (concealing a military object as a civilian object like Hegseth apparently did) is both morally abhorrent and also puts EVERYONE in danger because it erodes existing and pretty-dang-effective norms around “don’t shoot at civilian aircraft.”

If people had talked more about “here’s how other places dodge the bullet” rather than the more-doomery—but also surely more rapidly-clicked-thru—“here’s why we’re screwed” takes, maybe we’d be in a better place to resist all this.

We certainly wouldn’t have been in a worse one.

This is why I got so frustrated in 2016 w all the “I study authoritarian regimes, and we are on their path” experts.

I want to hear from those who study POTENTIAL authoritarian regimes, not those who study the ones that turned out that way.

You miss exit ramps bc of that.
Bolsonaro's in jail for 28 years, Yoon was successfully removed via impeachment, and now faces a death sentence for attempting a coup.

These are the total opposite of the failed Weimar—and now we can say American—approaches to dealing with right wing efforts to overthrow the political order.
An independent counsel has demanded a death sentence for ex-South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol on rebellion charges in connection with his martial law imposition in 2024, a court confirms.

Basically Jack Reacher has sex with The Law Enforcement Officer Du Livre as a break for the author exhausted by choreographing constant violence. Whereas a Regency duke has a full bare-knuckle boxing scene as a break for the author who really cannot think of one more synonym for penis.
