I'm sorry to hear that. I guess that for those of us who are (or at least look) white British, and who would only ever ask the question as genuine small talk, it's easy to be unaware how pervasive those kinds of attitude are 😢
Yes, in that kind of situation that is definitely someone being an arse.
Goodwin knows rockall about a lot of things...
It would never have occurred to me for one split second that pouring coffee down a drain might not be a sensible thing to do.

I would have thought putting it in a bin would be much worse, you really don't want a load of liquid sloshing about in there.
There's also the difference between "where do you live?" and "where were your ancestors from before coming to the UK?", both are plausible interpretations and intentions of the question.

Then it comes down to context and vibes whether you think the person is making small talk or being an arse.
How much would it cost for 1100 miles in a dinghy?
Unfortunately in a post-truth world, while social media continues to tell them their life is shit they will continue to believe it.

The average Trump voter is wealthier than the average Dem voter, but that doesn't stop their sense of aggrievement because they've been told they've been hard done by.
Even Russia and North Korea have "elections" – Trump will have some kind of sham election, so that he can then say that he won the biggliest victory ever with 500%, 1000%, 1400%, 600% of the vote...

I just cannot take this shit seriously. If you're a senior Labour figure and think that the party's stance is cowardly but are too afraid to put your name on the record saying it YOU ARE A COWARD.
Senior Labour figures have expressed dismay at the Party's "cowardly" and "incompetent" response to Tory shadow minister Katie Lam calling for legal migrants to "go home".

"What’s the point of us saying we’re anti-racist when we fail to call out racism," said one MP.

I'm willing to bet that no mainstream journalist in the UK has the faintest idea that Eurostar run any trains that *don't* go through the channel tunnel.
Bury him under the ballroom and invite everyone to dance on his grave.

Nigel Farage has, very clearly, broken parliamentary rules. Will any journalists challenge him on it? Via Private Eye
He never pays for anything.

I would take this even a bit further and say that the death cult Trump now leads is on a glide path to forever power and the end of American democracy. In other words, if nothing changes from how things are going right now, it is highly unlikely America will be *any* sort of democracy by early 2027.
Trump and GOP are planning on forever power. I still don't think people realize it. You need Democrats who are willing to step up and fight.

An OpenAI executive said GPT-5 found solutions to 10 "previously unsolved" math problems when in reality all it did was find online references to places where people had already solved them

This is insane.

“It won’t interfere with the current building. It’ll be near it but not touching it — and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of," Trump said in July. “It’s my favorite. It’s my favorite place. I love it.”

New Reform MP and former Tory Danny Kruger says the police in England and Wales would lose ‘operational independence’ and be put under the control of any Reform government. This is how MAGA fascism creeps in.
I've definitely noticed more mushrooms when out walking this year – not scientific proof because I'm not going looking for them or recording them, but anecdotally yes.

Tory MP Katie Lam demands that legally settled families be deported.

Barely concealed racism as Tories copy Reform. What next - special badges and camps for minorities.

A line in political discourse has been crossed.

I would have put good money on that extract being from Adrian Chiles. Worrying how many writers at the Guardian are putting out this kind of pointless drivel.

🚨🚨Excellent news: After three years of reasoning, pleading and conceding, the EU has had enough.

On Monday, the EU's MS are expected to back a new bill that will permanently cut #Russian gas supplies to #Hungary and #Slovakia — whether they like it or not. 🧵
