the game couldn't figure out what to do so it just kept going with me on the floor, unable to move

Enh, I really feel that's neither here nor there. Currency is just a means of exchange provided for goods or labor. To that end, taxes *are* taking value from one person or persons and giving it to others. It's a form of social cooperation to ensure that as many of the group survive as possible.
