“I am, as you say, relentlessly cheerful because it’s the best fuck you I can think of to this terrible world.” - Senior Chief Petty Officer Jenks Khan, from “And the Mighty Will Fall”

Thank you @kbwagers.com for another joyful read, and the perfect encapsulation of feels I’m holding close today❤️

To my academic colleagues here: anyone getting any AI-generated peer reviews on submitted manuscripts yet? If yes - what's your approach been? Reach out to journal with the receipts (e.g. AI-checker report) and dispute the review? Address any reasonable points in good faith?

i am increasingly bothered by terms like "showdown" or "face-off" or "clash" when used to describe corrupt and fascist power coming up against resistance because there's an implied symmetry that does not exist.

This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

i know you’re all wondering how my day is going because you care deeply and sure it’s barely begun but i just walked into the kitchen and i don’t drink or smoke weed and no one is ever kind enough to give me vicodin for christmas, so i ate two fistfuls of loose brown sugar.

Jacob Frey in practice is no different from the people who are doing this to us and our neighbors. He just wears jorts occasionally.

lol in my early 20s as a brand new baby queer vegetarian originally from a small town, I discovered garlic and put it into everything I made. I'm not sure which was more disturbing to my fam-of-origin: my new fangled gay liberal agenda or that I reeked so strongly of garlic they couldn't stand me 🧄😂

How is it possible to "Dox a murderer"?

Is that just called "helping to capture and prosecute a murderer"?

Asking for a country.

Shout out to all y'all here in MN (and other places w/ICE infestations) who are contributing in whatever ways and pieces and threads to the patchwork quilt that's doing all we can to take care of each other and fight fascism. Let yourself enjoy moments of care and lower-vigilance when you can ❤️‍🩹✊🏼
Went out for drinks/food/cribbage with a friend (who is also a n'hood ICE patroller) last night for the first time since...before Thanksgiving? (Which isn't a "oh poor me" - just a reflection on how off the rails my personal, work and community-level life has been.

And while the de-ICE-ing and neighborhood supporting continues unabated, I'm just raggedly grateful for some newfound bandwidth to accommodate all that along with picking up some re-connecting with folks I've been too long disconnected from over this entire past year of horrors.

Sat there at one point tearing-up at the relief of emerging from some things that have taken up all of the oxygen in Dec/January to be able to see someone for something that wasn't work-related, funeral/in-law caretaking and ICE patrols. And it was just so fucking chill and nice.

when unknown men come into our government center to grab teenagers, is there anyone that verifies somehow that they are actually federal agents?
These assholes look like the psychotically violent henchmen in a mediocre movie

China Mieville's The City & The City: 2 cities in same geography: "A denizen of one city must dutifully "unsee"...denizens, buildings, events in the other city."

MN as a whole feels like this right now - especially wrt outstaters like my parents who pretend/behave as tho this siege does not exist.
Living in Minnesota right now feels like being in the emergency room. Literally everyone is suffering in different ways, even if it's "just" a badly twisted ankle rather than a kidney stone or a full-on heart attack. The staff are working as hard as they can but energy and resources are dwindling.

They continue to pull, collect and use DMV data to track legal observers who are driving in our own neighborhoods breaking no laws, and to show us (and often tell us) they know who we are and where we live.

Nope - nothing has changed/de-escalated here. Sunday I was out observing ICE with others in my neighborhood and witnessed ICE (as per one of their usual intimidation tactics) lead us right up to and stop in front of the house where one of us in the group lives.
Q: Is Tom Homan easing the situation in MN?

Lyon: "We’ve seen a deescalation in the fact that the protests ... have subsided and ICE has been allowed to do their targeted intelligence-driven enforcement operations."

This is false. I talk to MN folks every day who say NOTHING has changed.

Walking up to an open restaurant and pulling on the door before realizing it’s locked and you need to wait for someone to let you in. Pretty common experience the last 2 months around the metro.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
