JFC wish people would stop saying THE HUNGER GAMES ripped off BATTLE ROYALE. (Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian, parroting Quentin Tarantino, being the latest offender.) Might as well say it ripped off THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME; DEATH RACE 2000; ROLLERBALL; THE RUNNING MAN; THE 10th VICTIM tbc

I have another #buyastrangerabook offer.

After the very sad news about Sophie Kinsella earlier,
@clairedares.bsky.social is offering to buy someone a copy of one of her books.

I've put a selection together, but if there's one you'd like, get in touch.

Really thrilled to learn that due to a huge outpouring of public support, Argonaut Books in the Edinburgh area will not have to compete with a Waterstones planned for around the corner. Kudos to Waterstones for listening and everyone on insta for being vocal. One of my very favorite UK bookstores.

Perhaps there should be an FBOL reboot called ASSIGNED READING where someone picks up a book they haven't read in 20+ years and realizes they were just a snot-nosed jerk when they read it for the first time

I love listening to radio plays from the 40's-50's, but they often feel goofy/outdated because characters need to narrate what's happening with actual lines like "Oh no! You've killed me!" Characters talking to themselves constantly about the crimes they are committing kind of kills believability.

This is a) awful for obvious reasons but also b) might end up in a lot of these archives being taken down because of the ethics around subjects' data being used in this way.

Subjects are meant to explicitly consent to all the ways their data will be used, which is obviously not the case here.
Talking to somebody yesterday about a Cdn oral history archive that disappeared - turns out LLMs were scraping it so much it crashed their servers so it’s offline. Vile vulture technology.

Instacart admits that customers are subject to "pricing tests."

we are all expected to pretend this man is the King of Health, and he himself believes it, which is why he confidently in front of witnesses attempted a thing he cannot do, knowing they will all say that he did

LEAVE Twitter already, folks. Get the fuck off there.
The only surefire way to stop oligarchs buying up the things we love is to drop those things the moment oligarchs buy them & that requires changing habits and massive self-discipline.
It means going to alternatives that might not be quite as good or convenient.
It’s really hard. But there it is.

I'm re-watching Magnum P.I. and I can't believe how vastly superior the 1980s ideal of masculinity is, vs today's whining, lying misogynist edgelord ideal that we see in culture all the way up to the Presidency.
The 50's stereotypical man had at least some other things to offer. Typically noble or stoic. Perhaps serving the greater good. Instead it's now a bunch of energy drink selfish neurotics who spend too much time at the gym and have no developed personality at all but being online.

No?
