Taking this opportunity to remind folks that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has no entrance fee.
It did in the recent past implement a nominal parking fee if you plan to park within the park for more than 15 minutes.

If my posts about Tanuki/Odin are making you want a hamster, that’s wonderful but I encourage you to do your own research into good ethical care! There are so many dedicated rescues out there with animals needing homes, do avoid the rodent mill using pet shops if you can

This is appalling. The BBC has thrown away its moral compass "on legal advice", and given up the last of its moral authority. They didn't say "it's really bad to send people to concentration camps but if we challenge it the Nazis will sue." Now, they and their lawyers are Republican-owned censors.
The BBC's has responded in The Guardian that this was a routine editorial decision, but also that it was made on legal advice. Those two explanations don’t fit together. /1

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

The lines are getting clogged from calls and Mastercard is feeling very pressured, they're looking into how to act in response. They're collecting information on callers to have a better understanding of who is calling in re the censorship issue

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

I'm 95% back to normal today after my nasty cold this weekend! I try to remember to be grateful for my general good level of health so I can bounce back from these things quickly. I am also grateful for whoever invented putting lotion in tissues.

I have another one... this is the tale of how my mother lost the right to cook holiday dinners. A few years back my Mom decided to cook a Christmas dinner for our side of the family, Prime rib. She's an iffy cook, so I offered to do the sides and dessert, so all she had to focus on was the rib.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.
