Before ACA, ~14-16% of people in the U.S. were uninsured. By 2023, the uninsured rate had fallen to a record low of 7.7%.

If they let pre-existing conditions become a deniable thing again a lot of people who consider themselves mostly healthy will be in for a terrible surprise. Ever broken a bone? Been pregnant? Congrats, that’s a pre-existing condition.

I talk about this a lot, but in the Seattle school district all kids get free breakfast/lunch regardless, and not only does it take care of the stigma, it’s an ENORMOUS time and energy saver. I have never once packed a school lunch, nor do I need to worry about getting food into them before school
School lunches get a bad rap, but they're healthier than the average packed lunch. And making them free for all amplifies academic and health benefits for low-income kids by removing stigma/shame.
So I'm glad Colorado voted to raise taxes on high-income households to make school meals free for all.

The description of the US as a "cruel and carceral nation" is spot on. If we are to ever move forward, we need to stop saying "this is not who we are." It's exactly who we are and have always been. The sooner we accept that, the sooner we can make actual meaningful change to this fucked up system.

I'm shaking almost too hard to type. I entered SLC airport and heard screams and cries for help. I could see people gathered around, watching. I sped over to discover this woman face down on the floor, four grown men pushing her down, while she cried "HELP ME" and pled for her child.

Absolutely! This is why universal free lunch exists: so that we would not means test children eating food *and* poor kids would not be stigmatized.

yeah, I hate when people talk about means testing social services. rich people need food too! and maybe we gave it to them, you'd stop judging poor people for needing the help. if we provided people with the things they needed, there'd be less incentive to hoard wealth in the first place.
Honestly, I don't care what people seeking assistance at food banks do for a living, whether they work or not, what they drive, etc.
People are hungry. Give them food to eat. Plain and simple.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.
