Meta: I have kept a public Mastodon account since leaving the other place, and this hasn't resulted in the level of drama that a public Twitter account did. Twitter kept turning my life upside down and never made me any money, so I limit social media because I don't have time for that.
USD is already crashing on global currency markets. This should be fun. I only got ~1/3 out before this, unfortunately :(

I don't spend much time in the US or see much television propaganda but I'm in Seattle today and the local ABC news affiliate was on. They were unironically calling whatever is going on in Venezuela a "special military operation."

And this is life under being governed by 4chan trolls, I guess.

Here is a thread about a true police-shooting incident that I'm going to use to pose a fun little thought problem for anyone anywhere who think there ia a single justifiable reason to ever allow a law enforcement officer to use force on a citizen and remain anonymous. From my back pages:

I think it is probably a bad idea to put clearly unhinged, angry psychopaths in federal law enforcement positions.

Im not so sure of this kind of math because:
a) 20% of the pop is rabid, and a lot of those are cops or military
b) capital makes a small force much more effective

I think the fact the US is just big and rich is a pretty steep hill to climb though. makes it hard to concentrate the goons
So to return to this: Mussolini had 200,000 blackshirts for the March on Rome in a country of ~35m. Hitler had 400,000 brownshirts in 1932 in Germany for a population of ~60m.

So around 0.6% of the population.

0.6% of 340m Americans is just over 2 million.

They do not have enough goons.
In 1932, on the eve of seizing power, the Nazi goon army - the Sturmabteiling or SA - numbered 400,000 members. By 1933, it was over two *million.*

DHS has 240,00 employees and lot of those are non-goons who have, you know, real jobs.

I have been as impressed by the normal people of this country as I have been disgusted by elite institutions and every bit of optimism I have that we are going to make it comes from that
It's incredibly demoralizing to constantly see the highest institutions of government and academia and the most important and widely seen news outlets knuckle under one after another, but then to see the gulf between that and the bravery of communities and neighbors and teachers - that's something

So we're not being greeted as liberators after all?
If this bizarre pacted transition in Venzuela continues, in the near future we should expect: (a) coup attempts, (b) mutinies, and (c) insurgencies.

I expect these to be related, for example, failed coup makers and mutineers head for the jungles to link up with ELN and dissident FARC guerrillas.

So far to avoid releasing the Epstein files, they have started another stupid oil war and are now threatening to invade Greenland. There must be something really, really bad in them.

Folks look at you Iike you’re crazy when you say we’re in the midst of the worst Article I constitutional crisis in 🇺🇸 history, & then it’s Wednesday.

Presidentialism, & the post-WWII imperial presidency now being fully weaponized by the authoritarians, was a grave mistake:

The American people can see for themselves how dishonest & cynical this is.

Drug trafficking warrants the use of military force to topple a foreign government in one instance, and then merits Trump pardoning the former Honduran President, lawfully convicted of the same crime?
RUBIO: Maduro was indicted. Nobody ever did anything about it.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hernandez was convicted by a jury

RUBIO: The pardon authority is something I'm not involved in

STEPHANOPOULOS: Do you support it?

RUBIO: I wasn't involved in those deliberations. I haven't looked at the case file.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

Yeah, people are fixating on a Cabinet Secretary being given a sovereign country to run because the president waged war without congressional approval and kidnapped the old leader. Weird that they’d get hung up on that.
WELKER: Mr. Secretary, are you running Venezuela right now?

MARCO RUBIO: Yeah. People are fixating on that. Here's the bottom line -- we expect to see changes in Venezuela

We may see efforts to indict the leaders of Cuba, Colombia, maybe even Mexico so that Rubio can say this again.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Why wasn't congressional authorization necessary?

RUBIO: It wasn't necessary because this was not an invasion. We didn't occupy a country. This was an arrest operation.
