There have NEVER been ‘unrestricted’ taxis for asylum seekers. Travel to medical appointments has ALWAYS required Home Office approval.

Many of the people we support miss urgent care because they can't get there. UK Gov must stop scapegoating people for its poor management ➡️ tinyurl.com/fzsk3aen

The main fact that stuck with me after writing a book about British Xmases is that The Times was complaining about decorations going up in October back in the *1930s*, Selfridges has had decorations up in Oct since at least the 1950s and the whole “earlier every year” thing is generally bollocks
Middle class people love to pretend to be appalled at Christmas decorations being either early or fun to look at, the ideal Christmas tree is put up at midnight on Christmas day and decorated only by a black cloak and an unlit matchstick

I am awaiting electricians for planned works. They need to get to every socket in the house.

This is a small house with a large amount of stuff. The past week has been *interesting*. My shoulders are divorcing me.

Parenting duty done: have made my children (13 & 16) sit down and watch The Blues Brothers with me. It's Papally approved, you know! Children loved it.

I’ve seen a number of people sharing this story with the comment, why didn’t he tell Stoppard, and I think the answer is probably “because people either don’t think to or think there will always be time to.” If someone has done something you admire, tell them.
I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

A perfect illustration of why we must stop pitting Arts and Sciences against each other. We need all of them, because that is what being human is.
Great culture can save lives. Literally.

Amazing letter in today’s @thetimes.com about Tom Stoppard

One of the reasons i love tolkien is the theme that despair is an enemy

and it makes clear you don’t need to have constant hope, you can get by with grim determination or spite but never despair
You can be as terrified or nonplussed or unperturbed as you like; the sun will still rise tomorrow & the rent will still be due on the 31st. The world has no romantic narratives for its fate except those we invent, because the world does not die. That is our privilege.
I said it elsewhere, but it’s weirdly exhilarating and addictive to be terrified all the time, and the people addicted to it, when they say this, may as well be saying “I can stop at any time, it’s just the world doing this *to* me.”

This country seems to have a bottomless well of sympathy towards asset rich pensioners and only contempt for anyone under 50 who is putting half their income into paying their landlords fourth mortgage and a big chunk of the rest into skyrocketing bills.
Look it’s never nice to find yourself in a position of having to move when you don’t want to but given that due to the volatility of the London housing market I have had to move FIVE TIMES since 2020 I’m struggling to feel very sympathetic towards people whose ’problem’ is a paid off 2mil property.

Well, my day started with two children trapped inside their bedroom when their bedroom door handle decided to internally disintegrate. Things can only improve from here, and "how to force open a broken door catch with only two paperclips" is a useful life skill after all. Learning is good!

First of all, I *love* this idea! Unfortunately, I spoke with Legal and identified a few issues with this approach. For starters…
Well, it's a little clearer now why billionaires are so invested in technology that produces better written emails.
