even the engagement with those books has to be carefully channeled.

“After Virtue” is an expressly anticapitalist book, but the young republicans are just told it’s the One Weird Trick to refute Rawlsians.
unlike most of his admirers I don’t think we should let him off the hook for this completely. the role of a teacher is not just to say correct things but to make himself understood to students.
I was a few years behind her in school and knew some of the personalities involved in this sordid business; I can’t confirm every detail of what Seavey said but the story is substantially true
most people don’t understand what they read, and most people who encounter MacIntyre encounter him on a syllabus of “conservative and Catholic thinkers”

— the private diary of Victor Klemperer, October 30th, 1933.
Conservative German philologist Victor Klemperer noted in his 1933 July diary that life was already unrecognizable and that “the political situation is bleak, the only comfort or hope is when the tyranny manifests itself ever more wildly, that is to say, ever more uncertain of itself”
I’m sure the feds will be happy to bail out OpenAI, once the models have been trained to suppress unpatriotic or treasonous outputs.

if a far-right Republican were elected in Alabama over the screaming objections of the Alabama state GOP, it would absolutely be a story
in fairness Trump is trying to privatize the commissaries

remember all those 'project 2025 isn't actually real, you fools, you naifs' media pieces.
Amazing how much 2025 was a hyper correction for the fact that in 2024 voters clearly didn't know what they were voting for because the media didn't report on Trump's actual policies/voters refused to believe what they were voting for.
Between 2020 and 2024, no New Jersey county moved further right than Passaic County (11pts). At 43% it's also the most the most-Latino county in the state, and is among the least-white overall.

Last night, it moved 18pts to the left, surpassed only by Hudson County (the second-most Latino county)
that was true for a long time though

He's not wrong, it's just hilarious that the GOP has already gone all in on identity-based harassment as policy while the President rants that groceries have never been cheaper.

Has New York Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs resigned over Mamdani yet? I hope he hasn't, so that he can instead resign over *improving Republican margins over Trump 2024 in an anti-Republican wave election*. Trump won Nassau by just 4%—now look at this bloodbath

"The fact that I am American means, among other things, people can't say, like they did about Francis, 'he doesn't understand the United States, he just doesn't see what's going on,' "
If your government thinks the Pope “doesn’t know what he’s talking about” when he defends migrants’ dignity, the world should see the warning sign. The US is no longer leading on human rights. It’s suppressing them.

not an exaggeration to say I think of the nationwide operation Obama built in '08 which led to his landslide victory, and how the second the election ended they dismantled the entire thing
ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections

NYT Opinion page tomorrow morning: "Is it too early to call Mayor Mamdani's administration a failure?"
What happens now is that every dropped piece of trash, every inch of graffiti, every broken down subway train, every disappointing sandwich, every rat in Central Park, and every single crime gets blamed on Zohran Mamdani... by racists who never go near NYC.

My tip as a Londoner. Shrug and carry on.

Nobody talks about it, but this is actually the way Donald Trump is most like Adolf Hitler. It’s not his racism or his will to power or his disrespect of democracy.

It’s his ability to convince a large group of people he’s a character with magic powers.
This explanation is ridiculous yet likely true. Millions of people did not conceptualize Trump the way we do (e.g., "bad person who did a bad job and wants to do bad things like X, Y, Z") but rather as a TV character, an avatar of prosperity who would somehow bless them economically.
"... the best explanation for 2025 is that voters didn’t know what they were getting with Trump 2.0 last November, but now they do — and they don’t like it."
