It might be worth mentioning and comparing the roles of the Science Media Centres a number of countries have established?

New Zealand, the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Spain, Taiwan all have SMCs.

There is an International SMC Network.
This is just nuts.

But if we have AIs that open pull requests left and right then no human maintainer can keep up. So the only option forward will be to close things up again. 3/

Talk in Europe now is a "two-speed EU" or Coalitions of the Willing.

My Charlemagne this week is on how to turn the European Union into the European Onion—a multi-layered construct with a core and outer tiers.

Unity still matters. Getting stuff done matters more.

Ich bin SO wütend. Es ist 2026. Wahnsinn.

A paper by Jeff Leek, Rafa Irizarry and others in Nature Biotech 2010 was quite ground-breaking, because it addressed such mundane statistics topics, in a biologist-friendly manner, in a glamourous venue that they respect:

Thanks, Simon!
But I think Paul's question is a good one... why isn't there more? I think partly b/c it's truly interdisciplinary, but not glamorous. Many biologists learn about controls the hard way, via reviewer requests. And there is certainly a good deal of cargo cult going on, as well.

- apply experimental design, negative and positive controls, replicates, adjust for batch effects (‘distribution shifts’) and do proper statistics,
- do knock-out and -in experiments, find genetic interactions and solve other combinatorial riddles.

Computer science needs more biologists. They are used to:
- study systems that are mindbogglingly complex and complicated,
- use reductionism to study and describe such systems, using famously clumsy and fiddly tools to collect noisy and incomplete data,

Some colleagues have solved this by defining that 'doing things' is talking.
So much of being a professor is stacked meetings where we talk about doing things and then never have the time to actually do the things.
