“Rain smacked Los Angeles. It splattered on the palm trees, sizzled on the neon, gurgled down the dirty boulevard. The town was sick. They hadn’t seen sunlight in almost a day. But I had the cure. A fifth of magic and a sack full of cold, hard joy. ‘Ho,’ I said once. It was enough.”

Pentatonix covering Cohen's Hallelujah just came up on the "Merry Mix" playlist at my in-laws'. No one else seemed to notice, but it felt pretty awkward to me! (Also why is Pentatonix covering Hallelujah on their Xmas album???)

it it me or does the entire "ai" thing seem like a force multiplier for the fascist destabilization attack on truth that this post is talking about
Love that there’s now an online civil war between historians about what “real” history is because some racist professor and his groyper pals on X posted a dumb thing and then everyone here decided to fight one another while the professional burns

I think this is the best way to put it. It is the human contribution that breathes life into the AI slop and gives it direction and intention. AI garbage doesn’t possess this on its own.
When you edit a human draft, it has intention and perspective. Your job is to figure out what those are and then get the writing to better align.

AI writing does not have intention. It often isn't saying anything at all. You don't edit it, you resuscitate it. It's more work than writing yourself.

THE USPS IS NOT A BUSINESS. IT IS A PUBLIC SERVICE LIKE ROADS OR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. "PROFIT" IS A NONSENSICAL FRAMEWORK TO EVALUATE IT.

The USPS faces a tight squeeze. With fewer people using the mail, it’s lost more and more money: $9 billion in the 12 months ending in September alone.

“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

What we have here is a top editor spiking a story not because of serious editorial concerns, but because:

1) she is insecure and needs to assert authority;

2) she wants to drive serious journalists out of CBS; and

3) she craves attention, which is her oxygen.

Especially number 3
Bari Weiss, cont'd: "I held that story because it wasn't ready. The story presented very powerful testimony of abuse in CECOT, but that testimony has already been reported... The public knows that Venezuelans have been subjected to horrific treatment in this prison... we simply need to do more."
